Fuel filter change

How often do you guys recommend changing the fuel filter? I have 2002 GP SE w/ the 3.1 engine.

You may have noticed GM doesn't specify an interval for the fuel filter, however, filter companies recommend every 25,000 miles. I do mine annually.

I've never done mine in 9 years and 305,000 miles. I think I'm overdue though.

hahaha, how do you change it if you wanted to do it yourself. is it recommended if you know how how to do a basic tune-up on the engine or should that be left to the ase certified guys.

Sounds like a good way to finance a beer budget..lol.

All the money saved on lack of maintenance will buy a lot of beer. I'd have to flip a coin.

I found it easier to disconnect the plastic-end first (then slide out the metal bracket) and then use wrench(es) to loss the metal-end...

What do mean mean by run whacky after disconnecting the battery? Is this after the filter has been replaced. I never have any startup problems after replacing the fuel filter. It is a good idea to take the ignition to the run not start position several times so the fuel pump primes properly before actually firing it up.

It may take a few seconds of engine turnover and start after disconnecting the battery, however, on subsequent startups it should fire up OK.

I‘ve had previous experience with one of my older cars (Chevy Elcamino)….. when the battery was disconnected, the pcm lost the most recent “calibration” (lack of a better word) data, and it took about 10 or 20 miles for the engine to run like it used too… Or am I over here in left field….

Normally not on odb-ii cars. Disconnecting the battery really doesn't do much and won't even put the PCM in relearn mode. It won't reset DTC error codes or clear the SES light either. The crank position angles are permanent and don't change with a battery disconnect either. I swap out between DHP and Intense PCMs all the time and never have problems like that.

If you get driveability problems like misfire or whatever after disconnecting the battery then something is not right.
