LT1 vs. LS1

I am going to be helping my friend redo an Opel GT. His plans are to put a small block Chevy into it, most likely a 350. I am mainly a body guy and don't know much about engines, and he is mainly an import guy that doesn't know anything about American engines. Basically what would help us out is if you guys could give us some of the major differences in the two engines. I know some such as the LT1 was Iron and the LS1 is aluminum. any information you can give is very welcome.

Thanks,
DJ

I'm a Ford guy, I can't tell you any differences but, I can tell you that given a choice I would take the LS1. OR JUST MAKE THE EASY AND BEST CHOICE AND DROP IN A FORD 5.0!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: LT1 vs. LS1

i personally would stick with the cast iron blocks, but since your redoing an Opel Gt, you may want the lighter Ls1 to keep the car light weight.

Sadly you are mistaken.

Both motors have graced both cars. Corvette, Trans Am, and Camaro.

Re: LT1 vs. LS1

ill jump in here since luos seems a little bored with this typical newbe thread.

genII/Lt1's have been in a variety of cars. 93-97 camaro/transam/formula, 92-96 (96 was lt4) corvette and impala 94-96, buick roadmaster 94-96 and cadillac brougham in 96

LS1/genIII --camaro/transam/formula 98-02, 97-01 vette i believe.

lt1s are reverse flow cooling, opti spark (pancake) distributer, hydraulic roller cam, belt less water pump, longer cylinder bore casting then gen I engines.

lt1s had aluminum heads in 92/93 and iron in 94-97 though there are some varients floating around.

lt1 block is iron, ls1 aluminum

lt1 intake is aluminum, ls1 is composite

lt1 has a higher torque to hp ratio then the ls1
So even tho its slower stock....it'll still snap your head back from a dig and bangin the next 3 gears

so yeah u can see im an LT1 guy....sorry i don't know more about ls1's, im still learning just like all the rest of us here.

Re: LT1 vs. LS1

well since an Opel GT is a light car we are leaning towards the LS1, but it depends on what we can find at a junk yard somewhere here in Michigan

1st off forget everything everyone else here has told you about both cars as I have not seen one bit of good info from anyone who posted. The amount of ignorant posts on this site is so far beyond my comprehension.

If you guys arent sure about something dont post it. I could go thrue here and just tell you how ignorant each and every post is. But Im sure you guys didnt post to be Jerks so Ill clarify a few things for you.

Ok, Now for the engines. I have owned 4 LT1's and 2 LS1's. There is no comparison. THe LS1 is simply 10 times better. I currently have both of them and My LS1 has a medium cam, clutch, stock 10 bolt with 4:10's,tune,Headers,SFC's and runs low 11's. All engine with stock heads all day. I trap 119 Consitantly.

My LT1 has heads, cam, stall, gears, and many other mods and My best trap to date on my current LT1 is 113 and my best quarter is 12.1 and I have 6k in it. I have 2300 In my LS1.

The Comment about LT1 making better power with displacment from the LT1 guy..Was a very ignorant thing to say. do some research before posting and if you dont know the facts please for the sake of those who are trying to learn dont comment.

LS1's have 340-350 HP stock and usually dyno 300 to the wheels in stock form. LS1's are a 346 CI motor. Less CID then the LT1 and makes over 50 More HP in stock form and quite a bit more torque as well. The LT1 makes very good torque at 2200RPM so people assume they make more torque. Not true.

LS1's can make 460 RWHP with cam only and stock heads. There LT1's with stage 3 heads and huge cams with 383 strokers that can swing this kind of power. There are LS1 head/cam packages that net around 550HP with stock Bottom end,na.
They are 2 completely different engines. The LS1 was built from a clean sheet of paper and is pure technolagy.
My LS1 ran a 12.9@107 stock with nitto's on the rear. My current LT1 was cammed with LT's and a tune before I could get a 12.9 out of it and with the hotcam, headers, gears, tune, stall, cai and a few other accenting mods I ran a 12.9@106
LS1:98-02 F-body,97-04 Vette.
And the comment about the 5.0..That one made my gut hurt.

If you can find a good deal on an LS1 buy it and be done with it. I have modded every car I have ever owned and thats a pretty large number of cars. I have had mustangs,Camaro's,TA's,ect.
