1/12 Moby Dick!!!!!!

Hello to all,

My name is Derek Collins. This is my second post and first thread that I've started. I've been building models for 37 or so years. After taking a few years off from building (10-12) I started this project a couple of years ago. My origonal thought was to see if I could produce a transkit for the Tamiya 935 and also give myself a nice subject to enter at TamiyaCon USA. Well, after a less then inspirational visit to TamiyaCon last weekend I desided I should get off my butt and get on with it. I have also desided that "IF" this does make the transition into kit form, it will most likely end up as a full curbside kit and not a transkit. I will try to post updates on a regular basis, job permiting.

I hope you all enjoy

*Will buy one*

Great, can't wait to see how this turn out!
Will you vac-form it, or make it out of resin?

Re: 1/12 Moby Dick!!!!!!

Brilliant! So many people have promised to do one of these but that's the only real attempt I've ever seen (bet Dale King would buy a few from you)

Good luck with it,

John S.

Wow, welcome to AF. This sure looks interesting! Is that body a solid piece, vacformed shell or something else? I'd love to know more details.

The hood, roof and windows are from a origonal issue Tamiya kit that I built when I was alot younger. They have been back filled with a material called Lightcast to make a solid block. The fenders have be sculpted from a solid block of the same material and then attached to the center section. Finaly the rear deck and center of the front splitter have been added. Sorry I don't have any earlier photos, never planned on going public. I'll post more pictures in a few days, it is a little farther along sence those pic were taken.

Yes I've heard about all the others, funny, I've never seen them either. By the way Dale King is a slobering mess everytime he lays eyes on it.

Hi,

no matter if you build (just) a curbside - this one will be different in this scale when finished

Wow, looks very impressive! But are you sure this is a Moby Dick? The original Moby looks like this or are you building an IMSA version?

No , This is modeled after the origonal. Yes , it does look alot like the later IMSA cars. The IMSA cars actually reverted back to the origonal design that was not exceptable to the FIA . But was exceptable to The US IMSA organization . The picture that you have posted the link is the car Porsche actually raced. The pictures below are the car at it's first test at Circut Paul Ricard.

The DAF's at a bit of a standstill, I am now trying to vacform the side panels, but have run into some problems of course. And it is indeed SolidWorksed.
Will you be replicating the engine from the bottom on your whale? Or will you go all out all out, and evergreen the rear tubular structure and engine?

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Great subject, I'd like to do something simular in 1/12 scale some day.

I thought that looked like Solidworks. I have a project of my own that has been 100% developed in Soildworks.

My plan is to build a fully developed chassis, engine, upside down transmission, suspension, interior, etc.

Wish me luck!!!

Here are somemore pictures of the body master nearly completed and ready for molding.

Enjoy
