I have a small problem with my Nissan Sunny 1.4L
My step mother took her three sons to the beach in it. She thought it would be fun to take it onto the beach. Until she got it stuck in the sand and the tide came in. By the time the tide went out again, it was almost in a major shipping lane. We have retreived the car but it's in a very sorry state. There is sand and water everywhere. I've pured boiling water onto the battery terminals to prevent further corrosion there, but I don't really know how to proceed from here to get it running again. It's not worth much, so I don't really want to spend a lot on it, but it is a good little car and I really want to get it going again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Taz |

Re: Seriously flooded engine
Well really I don't think there is much you can do.
Many electrical pieces are likely to be shot. The engine will have to be totally drained and then flushed a few times. You'd really have to pull the engine to ensure you got all the water out of it. The interior is probably in bad shape. Only real advice I would suggest is find another Sunny of like year and model for cheap and then you can probably use the flooded one as a parts car to fix any problems you have with the new one. If you have some spare time and a fairly mechanically inclined and still want to make a go of it I would suggest getting everything as dry as possible, clean out as much sand as you can and then start checking the entire car from front to rear. Make sure there is no standing water in the engine, pull the spark plugs and stick a chop stick or something down into the cylinder and see if it gets wet. If it does, rig up a thin hose (like 1/4" fuel line) to a wet/dry shop vacuum and get out everything you can. Drain all of the fluids from the engine and dump fresh stuff in then drain that, repeat until you stop getting water or dirt in the pan. When flushing like this, fill the oil and coolant up until you can't get any more in, let it sit for a bit then drain it all off. As far as electrical bits go, make sure there is no water trapped in a relay or fuse box, dry everything out as best you can and then check for obvious damage. Turn the key to the ignition position without cranking the motor and see if anything blows or if you can, get a factory service manual and a cheapie volt meter and check for non-functional parts. I'd replace the battery too, if all the acid as been replaced with water it's not going to put out any amps.

Re: Seriously flooded engine
Thanks Broke_as_****.
I've just spent the day draining it and putting in some flushing oil. The battery is dead and I have no charger so I have to wait until someone can give me a jump start. It's mostly dried out under the bonnet but I just want to get it running again, then I'll flush it over and over. Many thanks Taz |
