Looking at a 2002 GX

There is a 2002 Intrigue GX that has been sitting on a small dealer lot for many months now. dark blue, looks nice, 18500 miles...window says $8750/make offer.

A.) assuming everything looks good, how much should I offer?

B.) by 02, did they have the bugs worked out of the car?

A few years ago, I had a 99 GX w/ 3.5L. I loved it, but it did have it's problems. Headlight flicker (common alternator problem, if I remember correctly) and crank position sensor that cost me a few hundred bucks to get replaced at the stealer.

So, if anyone knows of any issues that the 2002's had, please post them here.
Also, if you know of any offers for free carfax or reduced price carfax, please emial me.

thanks!!

Re: Looking at a 2002 GX

I bought my 02 GX new and the only problem I had was a check engine light on at 15K.It was a connector seal at the canister purge that was broken, according to what was written on their work order.Other than that it seems the oil pan gasket sweats and I found a white film under my PCV valve that I'm going to get checked out soon.
Right now I have 56K on the car and is for the most part very reliable.I change all filters/fluids on a regular basis, use Amsoil, and I get anywhere from 27-30 MPG on the highway.

Re: Looking at a 2002 GX

Offer him $7500 for the vehicle. If I rmember right, the 2002 came with an extended warranty (somebody correct me if I am wrong) to compensate for the reduction in value by Olds going out of business. If you have the warranty with the car, I would swipe it up in a heartbeat.

I think the 2002 will suffer from the same problems as most Intrigues. I don't think GM invested much time or energy in Oldsmobile once the decision was made to get rid ot it.

The 5yr/60K warranty was available in lieu of the cash back. How you would find out if the car has it is take the VIN number to the service dept and they can punch it up.It is a GMPP which is basically a powertrain warranty and is not a bumper to bumper.

Re: Looking at a 2002 GX

According to Kelly Blue Book, retail value is $10,735 in excellent condition, private party value is $8435 in excellent condition.

It's probably a good deal. Maybe you'd want to have a GM dealer or a good GM tech that you can trust look it over for you.

I've got a 2002 GL model with 52K miles. The only thing, (other than maintenance), that I've done was to lubricate the intermediate steering shaft to eliminate the slight clunking noise.

One concern is that some of the 4T65E auto transmissions have had some issues that sometimes involve rebuilding and replacing a sun gear and a planet set. I'm hoping I never have to deal with this problem and I change the trans fluid regularly. (Although this could happen to any car).

At any rate, I like the car, it performs well, looks sporty and cool, and it gets 30-31 mpg on the road.
