Air bags

The other day a red light came on saying air bag. Machaniac friend tried to pull code but computer refused entry to air bag system. Really dont want to go to dealer with it, so anybody have this happen and any suggestions?? Seems I read somewhere about a sensor behind front bumper having the ground corroded but I dont want to fool with it and have those bags blow, what a mess that would be.....Oh yes its a 2000 se v6 engine....Bob M.

Re: Air bags

Welcome to AF!!

You will need a scanner that is capable of reading the air bag codes. If you had such a scanner then there is a problem with the air bag module. You may have to go to a dealer to get the code pulled. The air bag will not actually go off when the light is on but that is the true issue if you get into an accident then you may not have air bag protection. Get it checked right away.

Re: Air bags

Some GM cars will have a supplemental impact sensor located at the front end, however, I don't believe your GA does. All sensors are marked and color coded with yellow. The crash sensor is the SDM module located under the passenger side seat.

I agree with Lynn (GTPDad) you'll need to get it to a GM dealer that can run diagnostics on the SDM module and airbag system to determine the exact fault. If there are no problems the airbag light should reset after 250 engine starts. The dealer can reset stored codes in the SDM module and clear the airbag fault light.

Re: Air bags

Well thanks fellows, looks like GM dealer is going to get his hand in my pocket. Interesting as to how the senser is under the passenger seat...odd place for it. Im realy not a fan of air bags but they are there....Kinda miss the old days when we could just lift the hood and there was everything there in plain view and we could fix it. By the way, very impressive site you have hear......Regards Bob M.

Re: Air bags

Most of the time the control module is located under the front passenger seat. You may have to remove the seat and carpet to find it.

10-4 on that
Now you have to have a good scanner and a bunch of test equipment and be a electrican to.
A lot of good repair shops can take care of SIR problems.
Check around or give them a call.
Good Luck MT

Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

Absolutely not and the clock spring in the steering column may be bad also. SIRS are not normally a "dyer" type repair, be careful here!
