How to change the alternator/\

hey guys my battery hasnt been giving me enough amps to keep up with the music and extra stuff. I took it to autozone and tey told me that its my alternator that it is giving me 1/4 of amps than wats required. I will be changing the alternator next weekend. For a 99 firebird it is really visible because it can be seen towards the passenger side. I also want to change the belt with the alternator. I have never done this before and that is why i am asking help. Where should i start?
the things that i kno....
Disconnect the battery first.
How do i take the belt off?
The for the alternator how long does it take? and wat precautions should i take?
Thanks for your help.

Re: How to change the alternator/\

WELCOME TO AF!

first of all l dont know about v-6s (actually l dont know about anything but l will give some advices anyway)

get under the car and you should see small round metal like pulley, use a tool and turn it to clockwise and it will make the belt free and then u can pull the belt off. BUT MAKE SURE U DONT PUT YOUR HAND ANYWHERE NEAR THOSE ROUND METALS (I GUESS PULLEYS) they can get your finger..

remove the belt and then take a look a the alternator and see the bolts and electric connections.. and unbolt them and take the alternator off.. installing is reverse.

Re: How to change the alternator/\

First step is to disconnect battery as you know, then you look at the diagram of your belt routing on the radiator cover. It will show the belt tensioner. You then turn the belt tensioner counter clockwise while pulling the belt off. Then you just remove the harness on the underside of the alt. The positive battery terminal in the back and the retaining nuts and bolts. For a first timer I would give yourself a few hours to do it. After you have done this a few times I am sure you can cut that time in less than half though

it also helps to buy a service/repair manual, such as a haynes camaro/firebird manual, so that you have somethin for any future fixes..
