1987 ranger 2.9 problems! help!!!
truck died on the e-way last weekend. brought it home, and in trying to figure what what went wrong discovered I had no spark. New plugs, nothing. Cap and Rotor, nothing. ignition coil, nothing. Talking to local auto zone on the phone, they told me to bring down my ignition control module to test. Failes 7 times in a row. After replacing module, I realized I did not mark where the rotor was aimed for my timing. After turning crank shaft for tdc unsure where to allign rotor. Also unsure of how to wire plugs?

Haynes does a good job of leading one in this area. I would suggest one ... avail at AutoZone.

Re: 1987 ranger 2.9 problems! help!!!
I have an early edition of Haynes 1026. On page 2B-1 shows all you need. Be sure you understand how the cylinders are numbered ... there is a diagram for that. The distributer cap is also shown ... with corresponding plug-cable order.
After you hook up the cables-to-plugs in shown order, turn the crankshaft 'til cyl #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke ... ie, note the camshaft location. Now keep lifting and lowering the distributor, and twisting the rotor ... reingaging the camshaft gear in different locations, until you have the rotor pointing at the cap electrode for cyl #1. Hope this helps. PS: Since you haven't disturbed the camshaft-to-crankshaft relationship, turn the crankshaft to TDC. Is the rotor pointing toward the #1 cyl cap electrode? If yes, good. If not, rotate the crankshaft one full circle. |
