Drilled rotors illegal...

I just failed inspection because my front rotors are D/S Brembo. They said by Pa inspection they measure 0". He said he has to measure at the thinnest point, and since they are drilled that means 0". I think this is BS...Does anyone know if these are illegal in Pa? And if so, why? And who decided this? And why do new performance cars get to use them? etc, etc...

Dont know why they didn't pass. I've never heard of them not passing. My friend has them on a lightning, and he's had no problem.

I would contact the Pa. DMV authorities and question this. I am a NYS is inspector and they pass here.

Well, I called 6 other Pa shops and they ALL said they are fine. From their tone of voice they were surprised I was even asking.

I called back to the original shop and asked someone else about the rotors and they said "Let me call the state inspector and see what he says". He said if they are stamped with approval (DOT, Govt, etc) then they are fine.

I always tell myself not to go to the big chain car care places...now I think I will listen to my own sense. Firestone car care centers suck (at least the one near me does).

If he got a 0" reading he was measuring his brain instead of the rotors.
As said go to the top and report it and/or get it staighten out.

I've never used them and never would, just seem to shady. Hell I just made the mistake of getting aligned at NTB. I'll be sure to go back to the individual places I usually go to.

hahahaha i have no constructive input but i think its hilarious that anybody could be such a scum bag.if they "technically" measure 0" at their thinnest point, then wouldnt that mean "technically" u have no front brakes? the truck stopped when the momo tested them right?

I believe he is trying to just piss me off. Last week I had my VW TDI in for alignment and inspection and the mechanic spaced out and accidentally drained my oil. I use Rotella 5W40 full syn. in that car and they had to go buy me 2 new $15 gallons from Wal-Mart to finish the oil change.

I will be going back tomorrow am to get my sticker come hell or high water. I need to maintain some relationship with the shop because all 3 of my cars have their lifetime 4 wheel alignment service there, and I plan on having my cars for a long time.

Answer: What does DOT approved brakes mean?
There is no such thing as DOT (Department of Transportation) approved brake components. They do not certify or approve components. When a brake manufacturer or seller claims their product is "DOT approved", the claim is false.
The only components regulated by DOT are:
Brake hoses
Brake fluid
Tires
Exterior Lamps
(A manufacturer using the DOT symbol on the above products signifies that the manufacturer has "self certified" that the product meets FMVSS standards)
New vehicles must comply with certain government standards. The controlling document for standards is the "Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard", or FMVSS. Brake performance is covered under FMVSS sections 105 and 135. Vehicle manufacturers certify, either through self-certification or independent certification, that their vehicles comply with the standards.
Brake components, like many other vehicle components, are generally the way they are as a result of performance, cost, manufacturer preference, and sometimes, tradition! Materials, features (anti-rattle, anti-squeal, dust boots, fixed mount, sliding mount, piston count, etc.) and finish are not dictated by DOT
