Headlight Bulb "Upgrade" Problem

I just replaced the standard headlight bulbs of a 1996 SL 500 with an aftermarket "upgrade" which are XQ Xenon Quartz. The guy in the parts store told me these bulbs are interchangeable with the standard bulbs and do not require any further adaptation. However when I turned the new headlights on the bulbs started to smoke and the glass headlight assemblies are cloudy. Something is definitely wrong. Can anyone out there tell me what is wrong and what to do? Thanks. Lowell
