Mercedes Maybach

Mercedes Maybach
5 years since its prototype debuted in Tokyo Motor Show, the production (Mercedes-Benz) Maybach super-luxurious saloon finally arrives.
Aim at beating Rolls-Royce as the most luxurious saloon in the world, the Maybach is a small-scale production - just 1000 to 1500 units will be sold annually, as the worldwide market for this kind of super-expensive saloons is small. Because of this, the assembly of Maybach relies heavily on human hands.

Nevertheless, Maybach sources a lot of components from Mercedes' parts pool to reduce cost (although it is sold at 230,000 pounds!) and improve reliability. The double wishbones front and multi-link rear suspensions are adapted from S-class, so is the twin-turbo V12 engine and 5-speed automatic transmission. SBC braking system comes from SL, AIRmatic DC air suspension with adaptive damping is borrowed from new E-class. Not bad, because these are all high quality and high-tech components!

Maybach is famous for two things: big and luxurious. How big? the long-wheelbase version Maybach 62 measures 6165mm in length (hence giving the name Maybach 62), a whole meter longer than a S600L. Wheelbase is an exaggerate 3827mm (740mm longer than S600L!). It is also very wide (1980mm) and tall (1573mm). Parking beside a S600L must make the Mercedes-brand flagship looking like a mini! even the smaller Maybach 57 (with 5.7 meters length and shorter wheelbase) is still considerably bigger than the oppositions.

At 2780kg kerb weight, the Maybach 62 is of course a heavyweight saloon but not too heavy. For reference, Bentley Arnage is considerably smaller but still weighs in excess of 2500kg. In fact, Maybach cuts weight by using aluminum roof, bonnet, doors and wings. As a result, the whole bodyshell weighs 622kg.

Maybach calls its engine "Type-12", which is actually a V12. The 5513c.c. engine is essentially the turbocharged version of Mercedes' own V12 (hence still 3-valve and twin-spark per cylinder), with twin-turbo and individual intercoolers added. Forged con-rods and crankshaft are strengthened to handle its new-found power - 550hp and 664lbft. Now the Maybach V12 beats Bentley V8 as the most torquey engine in the world.

Driving through a Tiptronic-style 5-speed automatic (basically a strengthened version of the S600's), surprisingly, the 2.8-ton Maybach 62 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds (i.e. 5.2 seconds for 0-60mph) !! unbelievable. However, top speed is again regulated at 155mph.

After all, the strength of Maybach is luxury rather than performance. The extra-long wheelbase enables a set of aircraft-style rear seats, which can be fully reclined and have footrests. Unsurprisingly, the seats have built-in ventilation, heaters and massagers. Another interesting feature is the panoramic glass roof whose transparency can be altered by a switch. Basically the same theory as liquid crystal display, not any state-of-the-art technology, but undoubtedly the first of its kind applied to cars.

First of all, the people who would purchase such a car will be interested in the prestige and ‘look at me I’m rich’ statement. This car does not do this! It will be classed as ‘Look at me, I’m in a Rolls want-to-be!’ Whereas the persons in a Rolls Royce will always have the ultimate statement of achievement!
Rolls Royce will always be the very best in Luxury! The very best and most desired car in the world!

Also, It has been stated by Mercedes that it will not be classed as a Mercedes because people do not want to be associated with Mercedes when driving the Maybach (Mercedes representative), it would not have that prestige and uniqueness about it! Therefore the Maybach should have its own directory on the forums, of be slotted in the ‘other cars’

Do yourself a favour and buy the Rolss Royce, it has much more staement and will turn heads more than some ugly Mercedes typically Mercedes ‘shoddy built’ offshoot!

Everything is about a statement now and looking good, your just a little whinny bitch, maybe people have cars like that because they enjoy them, NOT always wondering what other people are thinking about them.
