96 Grand Am Check Oil Light

Gotta 96 Grand am GT 4cyl. Check oil light started coming on a month ago. Had the oil changed and the light checked and they tell me the level is correct. I looked under the car and noticed some oil around the oil pan. Is this normal? Funny thing is is that the light shuts off if I restart the car but when the car is sitting and I turn it on the light stays on. Worried about sludge in the engine now. Is this light serious?

Tried to diconnect the battery to reset it but didn't work? Any suggestions?

Re: 96 Grand Am Check Oil Light

I had same thing happen about 6 months ago on my 96', not sure but it may be sending unit has seen better days. On mine it would come on when first started, but if I shut it off and started again right away , light would go out.

Re: 96 Grand Am Check Oil Light

Had same prob. with '95 quad 4. You didn't have to start the engine, just turn to run, then off, then start and light would go out. Changed sending unit in oil pan (bolts up thru bottom-don't have to drop pan!), and problem was fixed.
