Re: no power to the fuel pump
I pinched the hot wire on top of the tank when I put it back in and the FP would work, then not work, work, then not. I pulled out the tank again then tested the pump and it work every time. Put it back in and it work for a couple of days then quit. I guess that's why theirs a sheild to protect the wires. Replaced the wires and all is good.

Re: no power to the fuel pump
Doesn't anyone check the relays anymore? It could be going bad as well, and it's only about $15-20. If it's bad = no fuel pump. check it out.

Re: no power to the fuel pump
I think the FP has it's own ground wire, mine had 2 wires going to it, a Hot and Ground

Re: no power to the fuel pump
check the fuse.. if the fuse is good check the relay. pull the relay. jump terminals 30 and 87a in the relay socket. (terminals 30 and 87a are marked on the relay) if the fuel pump works then replace the failed relay. if it doesnt then its time to get a wiring diagram. if you dont understand what i just wrote then do not try this as you can fry the electrical system if you dont jump the correct terminals.

Re: no power to the fuel pump
What engine and engine code?
Does the engine have spark to spark plugs? Most of them have a fuel pump prime connecter close to relay or under the hood. Check for 12 volt power on the connecter key on engine start or key on engine prime. If no power and you are sure it is the fuel pump prime connecter hook a fused 12 volt jumper wire to it and see if fuel pump runs. Also the black wire to fuel pump plug in at tank is the ground wire for fuel pump. Might make sure it is grounde. And id fuel pump does not run with jumper wire on prime connecter check for power to fuel pump at fuel pump wiring plug in. MT

Re: no power to the fuel pump
My problem seems similar. I recently bought an 87 S-10 pickup, V-6, 2WD auto, that had been sitting up for two years, got it cranked and it ran fine for 2 weeks. Then on restart it acted like it was running out of gas. With a little gas poured into the engine, it cranks fine and runs a few moments until that gas is burned up. So I assume fuel problem, not electrical. I thought maybe clogged fuel filter from sitting up, so I changed fuel filter. No effect. So maybe fuel pump relay or fuse? I found what seems to be the fuel pump relay on the driver's side of the firewall, the left of a pair of relays if facing the firewall from the front of the vehicle. But before I change the relay, I'd like to eliminate possible bad fuse as source of trouble. I do not have an owner's manual. I would appreciate guidance as to which fuse controls the fuel pump.
Thanks, HRW |
