2002 Impala makes airplane noise

My girl mom cars is making a sorta air plan noise while driving, and gets alittle louder when you push the breaks, but it always present. Hub bearing is what i shop said is wrong, there wanting charge $165 to do the job. Has anyone else had this problem? hmmm, i thought that maybe the break hose collapsed, and doesn't allow the caliber piston to move as it should..

I would inspect the brakes closely on this first as I am doubtful it is bearing though it could be...w/out knowing the mileage...there could be some foriegn matter or one of the shoes gone bad start where you think the noise is coming from. Both sides of the rotor should be smooth, if groovy then it's time for a brake job...The rotors can be turned if not too bad and if still in spec. Noises can be difficult to find good luck!

Why assume the shop is wrong common problem, common symptoms. Get a written assurance that this will fix the noise.

Classic hub bearing failure symptom as Max said. $165 is for labor only I assume, which isn't too bad.

Re: 2002 Impala makes airplane noise

could be the transmission ? i would check the fluid level after NON freeway driving for 15 minutes, on alevel surface...that is a level surface to check the t fluid. . I had a car that had a sqeeking noise coming from a wheel. Sometimes sounded like the front, sometimes the back. Slowly driving with the windows down past something that will deflect the sound back at you like an ally wall, or what i did. I took a cassette recorder and a cheap mic. I tapped the mic over each fender ( use painters tape) and drove. I would start the tape recorder, get out of the car, bend down and say into the mic which fender, then drive. Sure enough playing the tape back it without a doubt told me which wheel it was.

Try the power steering fluid. If it is low enough for air to circulate, it will whine. PITA if you have a 3.8 to get to.
