Valve Lash>Immediate Help

Ok recently i posted a thread about how my engine was making a rattleling noise, today a friend told me that it is probably that my car's valve lash is not adjusted correctly.
My questions are as follow:

What is the proper valve lash for a 1994 LT1?

My could have caused this over night disajustment? (A friend said it was my recent change of oil from 10-w40 regular to 10-w30 synthetic)....car has 29k miles after rebuilt.

I was not to sure what the rocker arms were and before speaking to my friend i diagnosed that that was were the noise was coming from. So smart me took the cover off found that indeed some rocker arms had play and some were tight. So yes i tightened it to see if i could remove some play and i did. Cranked up the car, drove around and the noise was still there.

Is my car safe to drive now that my stupid ass messed with the adjustment, Or could this really harm my engine.

Is it a big deal or can i just change the oil back and let it fix itself.

Sure you don't have a bad rocker?

Stock rockers?
Spinning to a higher RPM than stock?

Re: Valve Lash>Immediate Help

I know on the older Chevy small blocks the valve lash is about 1 turn past zero. I can't say for sure that is the case with a 94 but it shouldn't be much different. You need a book to tell you which valves to adjust at #1TDC and at #6 TDC. With the timing mark lined up and the rotor pointing at #1 plug wire set the following valves: Exhaust # 1,3,4,8/ Intake #1,2,5,7. Rotate the engine until the timing mark is back at TDC and the rotor points to #6 plug wire, set the valves: Exhaust # 2,5,6,7/Intake # 3,4,6,8. Turn the nut on the rocker arm out until there is play. Turn it slowly back down until there is no play, you are looking for UP & DOWN play. It still will wiggle and may seem loose, but look for UP & DOWN play. When you reach the point of no play turn it one complete turn further. That is from the book I have which only goes up to 85, mine's an 83 T/A. What I do is, when I assemble an engine I install all the rockers and run the nuts down about 4 threads. That is where you normally end up after going through the above process. The oil shouldn't have anything to do with it, I run 10w-30 synthetic in mine and 5w-30 in my V6's.

Re: Valve Lash>Immediate Help

I would stay outta the loud pedal until you get it figured out.
You probably need rockers.

Is it a tick? Rattle?
And you are 100% it is coming from the rockers?

Re: Valve Lash>Immediate Help

Probably needs new rockers. Can you turn it over without spark and fuel with the valvecover off?? Make sure the car doesn't fire of course. See if you can see anything loose.

I can see oil making a little difference, but I would think a synthetic would quiet it down, not make it louder. Unless the rockers are dead, and the older oil was keeping them from dying completely.
You are revving higher than stock right?

Re: Valve Lash>Immediate Help

Yes revving higher than stock...but my guages are not accurate so i dont know exactly...RPM and MPH guage in my car off by a little and the rest well i dont trust them.
I was able to shake the rockers with my hands side to side.
And the oil thing is that im in miami and a few mechanics have told me i should berunning thicker oil and they say this swicth is wat finished off the rockers.
Now i dont know if i could just tigthen mine or if i need new ones...
How much is new rockers, and wat part is it? just the taco looking thing on top?

Re: Valve Lash>Immediate Help

So regardless their saying i need thicker oil 20-w50 because of my temp down here.and it will perserve my engine longer at the cost of a little power and more gas cunsumption
Im going to change my oil on sunday and see if sound gets better.
