Problem with my brakes
Warning: I know nothing about cars. Nothing, nothing, nothing.
Last year, I had the brakes on my '97 Jeep Wrangler Sport replaced. Ever since then, the brakes squeal (a metal on metal, grating sound) *all the time.* There is a *ton* of brakedust on the two front tires, as well. When I took the Jeep back to the mechanic (a mechanic I no longer use because he did some shoddy work), he insisted that I would need to get new brake pads - more expensive ones to avoid the squealing. I don't hear any other cars on the road with this kind of squeal, and my new mechanic said if he had done the work, he would at least try to replace the brake pads at no charge. I'm scared to go back to the first mechanic (he's a big dude, I'm a small girl) - do you guys have any thoughts? Thank you!

Take it to a brake shop like Midas or other Chain store that has a lifetime warranty on their brake jobs. If there is a problem later and you have problems with service, you can take your Jeep to another store in the chain to have your warranty work done.

I would take the jeep back to the original shop and take a couple of big friendly guys with you!!! Let them hang around and drum their fingers on the counter while you talk to him about making the repair right  Seriously - unless you are willing to eat the expense of a new "fix", you need to get back to the last guy who worked on it. With backup if necessary!!! Hopefully the pads aren't scoring the rotors...... JD

yeah i agree with these guys... i'd go bad to the original mechanic first with a few "friendly guys" and see if you can get him to do his crappy work right... but if not then yeah i'd go to midas or somewhere that deals with that stuff better
