A Few Questions Please!

Hello,

Let me start by saying I just purchased my first jeep ever. I have roughly 1300 miles on it. It is a 2006 Wrangler Unlimited 4.0L automatic.

1) I realize the gas milege is not the greatest, but I haven't even gotten 15 miles to the gallon on average yet. I drive about 60/40 in town to highway. Will this improve? Is there a break-in period for these motors?

2) I also noticed that the idle is rough. The tach registers about 500 RPM at idle. That seems kind of low to me.

3) I have oil that leaks on to the top of valve cover. It is coming from around the rubber seal on the air line that runs from the air filter box to the valve cover.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated. Again, bear in mind that some of this stuff may be second nature to most of you, but it's all new to me Thanks

Mike

Well, I have one suggestion that may make all your problems go away. Take it to the dealer and use that DC warranty. It is practiacally a new Jeep and it is under warranty. I would not even bother wasting time to diagnose it, just make an appointment and take it in. It will not cost you a penny and you will be happy you did when they fix it.

Oh, don't expect too much more than that in the MPG category...

I realize everything is still under warranty. Before I run back to the dealership I wanted to find out if there is an actual problem! I dont need to make a trip to the dealership, leave my vehicle there all day, and have them tell me "nothing is wrong" it will get better as the motor breaks-in. I wanted to pick the brains of the Jeep experts on this board before I made a decision. Are you telling me there is a problem? Thanks

Re: A Few Questions Please!

Mileage is a hard thing to judge over the internet. I dont know how fast you accelerate, how much you weigh, your altitude, what grade of gas you use, tire pressure you are running, etc. There are so many factors. I will say it may get better as you get some miles on it but if you ever end up getting 17 or more, you are doing good.
As for the oil leak. Definately have the dealer fix that. No new vehicle should be leaking oil or anything else. Dont take no for an answer.
The inline 6 isnt the smoothest idleing engine but 500 RPMs does seem a bit low. Talk to the dealership about this. Again, dont take their word that its ok if you feel at all that they arent being forthright. Ask to start or drive another 4.0 Jeep on the lot and compare for yourself if you have doubts. You will either figure out that your Jeep runs as it should or have evidence that it doesnt.

Re: A Few Questions Please!

Mike,

From the information you are given it could be anything really. I would let the mechanics at the delership take a look at it and see that they find. Let us know how it goes though...

Thanks Ray,

The oil is coming from what appears to be a crankcase pressure relief valve right on top of the valve cover. I pulled up on it and it does open slightly. I've never seen this before on any motor. It is just a tiny bit of oil, but it took me by surprise. I filled up again yesterday and my MPG was 16.6!
