944S noise problem

I have a 1988 944S with a load serious vibrating noise sounds like it's in the left rear. I have had this car sence 1998. I just replaced the front mounts. Any sugustions?

I just purchased an 87 944 with some of the same issues. How many miles are on it. It could be a wheel bearing going out, or a cv joint, or a rear end alignment issue. Does it do it at a specified speed? Do the rear tires look like an uneven wear, scuffing. Even a lost wheel weight might do it. Any more info would help. What does it sound like.

Probably CV-Shaft related.
Check Axle, as well as, the Bolts.

The car has 100,000 miles, the motor, clutch, water pump, 10,000. bolth Axles one new one about 2,000 miles. The trans has been down and the clutch checked including the pilot bering. wheels are stright no clean spots from missing weights. I should probly tell you I am only a newbe to this forum, I have owned four Porsche sence 1981, A 72 2.0 914, in the pre cheap heat exchangers. So I went to the water cooled, a 1979 924 to keep warm. When the 924 S came out I bought my first new water cooled. In 98 I found this one owner 944S. Better interior, more hp, more tire. I have never a noise to compare it to. It sounds like that spins sould sound Death to machanical process. This sounds like nothing I have heard or felt in thity five years of racing road, drag, drivers ed., autocrosses and boats.

Well, this is something I would not suggest, but I have done it in the past. Jack up the rear end, block the front tires, and slowly bring the car up to speed and see if you can pinpoint the noise. I have never done this on a porsche so i do not know if this method would hurt anything else like the tranny. Like I say I am new to the porsche scene but I would try to gather as much info about this procedure before I would try it. And I might be getting there soon myself. I'd like to see shade tree mechanic try this on tv. Also I would like to add one of my favorite sayings. "We are paid professionals. Failure to follow all safety procedures may cause great bodily harm and-or death." Let us know how it works out and if I try it I will do the same.

It doesn't make the noise without the wieght on the car. Glad to see we have a sense of humor. The car is at a friends shop we can't get the noise to happon on the lift. Thanks for trying .

I should have menioned if you want to try that put jackstands under the torqe tube supporting the wieght and a floor jack under the trans. Chock the front wheels and you can run them.

Thanks for the info. I will keep that in mind. Sometimes when working on our cars, all we have left is a sense of humor. Going back to your car, if the noise only happens with weight on the wheels, it could still be the wheel bearing. I can't think of anything else it could be. Or is it possible that the break caliper is not releasing all the way causing the pads to vibrate? Will the noise change when the brakes are applied? Just thinking out loud. I had that happen on an eagle talon once.

I replaced the rear E brakes, cables, holddown springs, e pads, rotors and b rake pads. The Car is at a indepent Porsche shop from 12/05 driving him crazy the shop in in NNJR reigon, Self PCA member 11/81. When shop calls friends They tell hill better him then them but no help.

I would check the wheel bearing and the CV. The CV's on 944's have a tendency of losing bolts...it might have come loose. I lost 4 bolts of a rear CV not long ago.

Sounds like you have been throwing a lot of money at this problem. Sounds like a stumper. I have thrown every idea at you that I can think of. I hope you find the problem.
