It's still going strong!!! :-)

Hey guys/gals,

Just wanted to let you all know that I just had a smog check on my 89' Camry and it still passed with flying colors so if you have about 210,000 miles on you Camry then relax cuz your catalytic converter should still be good. If your Camry has more on the same converter then let me know for future reference.

Like my other thread I'm counting the pennies to keep up this car.

240K miles on an 87 with the original converter passes the California smog test just fine.

RIP,

For an 87' Camry that's impressive! I not too far behind you so you and I drive about the same miles annually. Currently I'm putting in money to get my moms/now mine Camry into shapefor everyday usage.

Mo power to ya!

Re: It's still going strong!!! :-)

That is pretty impressive. I just replaced the catalytic converter and muffler on my 84 Toyota Van. This is what my old cat looked like after 212,000 miles.

Believe me. I expected worse. I never had it smog tested. It's not required where I live. But I had a feeling the old catalytic converter was, pretty much, spent and might be clogging up by now. I got a new Maremont catalytic converter for $100. I definently notice a little bit more power now.

kcg795,

I guess that's what mine may look like also! I have currently about 210,000 miles on my Camry and it still passed when it was tested. For a new converter that price is not too bad cuz I thought they'd be pretty expensive.
I don't really know much about the clogging issue but I'd suspect it's from all the spent exhaust/crud that goes therough the pipes. So far my Camry's still peppy so mine might not be so clogged-up. The Toyota guys haven't said anything yet so maybe it fine. For now I'm rolling the dice on mine til it goes bad. Thanks for your posting.

Re: It's still going strong!!! :-)

A new catalytic converter from Toyota is around $400. I think letting my van misfire and a blown headgasket is to blame for my catalytic converter to clog up a bit. My engine's been rebuilt. So, I'm looking forward to seeing 400,000-500,000 miles on the odometer. Oh wait. I'm NOT! I want this thing to last forever! Which it will.

But if it ain't broke. No need to fix it. Fix any misfires immediately and your cat should last a long time without replacing. I'm running Bosch Platinums now. I want to go with NGKs to be on the safe side.
