Cams for the 4.0L
I have an '02 Wrangler X with the 4.0L I6. I am looking to do some head work, but I am used to the 420A motor I had in my Eclipse... So basically I need somebody to tell me if I'm just going to loose torque with some of my ideas. I really liked the gains and sound from the cams I had in the Eclipse. Where can I get some for the 4.0? Also, I was thinking about a Port and Polish. Feel free to give me a list of anything and everything I could do to the head.

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
Just remember that this isn't a sports car, and is designed to have low end torque rather than high end HP.
That said, there are plenty of catalogs that you can check for performance parts for the 4.0: www.4wd.com www.quadratec.com www.jcwhitney.com www.thejeep.com I've ordered from 4wd and quadratec.

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
I deffinately realize that, and that's why I need input. I'm not used to worrying about torque at all with a 2500lb Eclipse.
I think displacement is the way to go... stroked and bored. However, I am only doing some headwork now. I do think that increasing airflow will help once I get around to working on the bottom end. Is this the case? Intake, P&P the head, cams, rockers, and full 3'' exhaust is what I'm thinking for now... I'm sure I'll loose some torque, until I get the displacement to use this added airflow. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
I'm not an expert on it all, but the things you're listing will help get more power out of any engine. There are matched kits on the websites I suggested, if you take a look you might get a good overview on it.

I used to know a bit about lift and duration but would have to do some research. Maybe post the stats of the cam on the technical section of the website to get some opinions from those who know.

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
The above cams won't work... Now I'm looking at the CraneCams.com site the attempt to find something.

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
wow! While researching I found that you can bore and stroke the 4.0L to a 5.0L. And then I found that you can also throw on one of those Avenger superchargers. That'd be well over 400hp and 500ft.lbs. That would be fun, but I don't need that! Here are the links incase anybody else is interested:http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html http://www.avengersuperchargers.com

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
That would just be a pain in the arse... The whole drive train would have to be bullet proof. And there's no need for that much. It's all about gearing! I just want a little extra, and I really like the sound of some mean cams and a throaty exhaust. I'll update when I find something.

Re: Cams for the 4.0L
Well, I called CraneCams and figured out what is needed to install some cams:
Crane Parts: PowerMax Cam (753901) Hydrolic Lifters (99278-12) Valve Springs -- Optional (99833-12) Jeep Parts: Chain (53020443) Crank Gear (53020445) Cam Gear (53020444) Bolt Kit (83502890) This is costly for a 10% increase in tq and hp... But they sound mean! lol I'm going to get a better intake, the cams, Borla headers, Magnaflow Cat, and a Borla Muffler... all 3'' so that it's ready when I stroke and bore to 4.8L. I'll have to figure out how to post sound clips once I get this all on.
