87 IROC wants more power

Intake and exhaust.

Intake and exhaust are where you would normally start if you have a healthy engine...but if the engine is worn, you might want to start with a rebuild...and upgrade from stock parts in there, cam, lifters, pistons, the possibilities are endless...and if this isnt your only car, you can make a nice project out of it...

Anyone who's had their Camaro for that long has no doubt had some fun with it. If it's high miles and been romped on alot, i'd be lookin at a new short block, save the hassle.

do you mean getting a new short block and upgrading that? That would be a good way to go because he could still drive the car while he is building his engine...

That's the idea. But mainly what i was getting at is certainly it dosen't feel as pepy or as pepy the epa would allow for that matter in 1987, almost 20 years ago. But, by the time you start adding up all the parts to rebuild the current motor, the machining, the blueprinting and a partridge in a pear tree, your going to be in the neighborhood of a decent "new" 350 shortblock. And that's the other thing, it's a 350, preactically dipsposable by today's standards. You buy the new one, get a core credit for the old, transfer all the accessories and intake over, and boom, performace of 1987 again. Plus, if the extra bucks are there to blow, then yes, one with a cam, maybe even a strocker, 383 > 350

but if you are planning on upgrading all the main components for more output in the engine anyway, then wouldnt it make sence to just do it to the current one since those parts are basically the same things that are replaced while rebuilding an engine...
Once you change the pistons, rings, cam, lifters, chain, bearings, oil pump, and seals; whats left?...not a heck of a lot...
Basically, what Im trying to get to is:
If you do the rebuild yourself, then the money you save (that you would have had to fork out to buy one that someone else rebuilt) could go toward the cost difference between standard replacement and performance parts...so that you spend about the same amount(depending on what parts you choose to upgrade to) on a short block 'that will put-out on the first date' as you whould have on a standard rebuilt engine that is gonna make you take her out several times before you get what you've wanted all along...lol
How valid would you say that statement is?

Also, I am only pushing the idea of rebuilding the origional because if it were my IROC, I would personally prefer to keep the engine with the matching numbers...

You have to remember that everyones ablility levels are not readily known. Thus, I always start off on a general note of how to approach things. You can never assume anything. A thread can last 5 damn pages long trying to help someone with a no start problem and finally all the sudden an obvious cause surfaces that was never mentioned at day 1.

So I start off easy by saying, a new or remanufactured motor will bring it back to life back in the day. Should he reply back, "that's fine, but I'd like a little more ompht out of it" then, I'd go to the next level.

Another problem is alot people throw out some very unrealisitc shit they read in a magazine somewhere and think "ooh, hey throw these parts in your car and it will go really fast", when the concept of streetability is thrown out the window.

if its an iroc in good shape i would have to suggest keepin the original engine, even stowing it away if he does want a new block in the car. u know how u feel when u look at a 70 chevelle or 67 camaro that has a great engine but its not the one that goes in it? thats how this cars gonna be in 30 years. it may not seem now that people r gonna look at 3rd gen cars like that, but frankly its a shame how hard it is to find ones that are untouched.make it fast please, but dont cannibalize it.if i spelled that right haha...
