Motor Oil ?'s

I just bough a '90 Civic hatch on monday. It has 108,000 miles. I want to change the oil but not sure which to get. The book recommends 5w-30 but i see alot of people using 10w-30. Also i wanted to use the mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic oil for higher mileage cars but have heard that it is not good to use synthetic oil on older cars because it might cause leaks. Also the book says 5w-30 and the mobil 1 for higher mileage cars only comes in 10w-30. Which wieght do u guys use with ur 4th gen hatchbacks???? 5w or 10w?? Also synthetic or not???? -Thanks alot for any replys

Umm, You're supposed to put oil in your car?

J/K... I use factory recommended.. Doesnt mean I couldn't use something else though.

I use 10w-30 GTX. Using synthetic in your older engine is probably not worth it. That process should be started a lot earlier in a car's life. On loose (older or racing) engines it tends to go through them too.

The best thing you can do is regular oil changes. Stay away form those crappy orange oil filters too.

i love those orange filters, lol. um when you look at the number of teh oil. i.e. 5w-30 the 30 is the weight and the 5 is for weather conditon the oil will be used in. so dont worry about the first number unless you live in cold and snowing kind conditions. the important number is the back number, the 30.

you can get any oil with 30 weight and its all the same. front number means very little. so if you live in a warm place then theres no difference between 5w-30 and 10w-30

No orange filters? Does that mean I shouldn't use those Fram Oil Filters? I thought they were like the best. What kind does everyone else use? Also, what kind of gas does everyone use and what engine do you have (ie are u suppose to use premium when you get a B16A, or should I even be using premium now with my stock Si engine)?

I'm using 91 octane with my b16a, I always used 87 before, figured it didn't matter since my 60 HP HF was really, really fast.

actually the front number does matter in the oil. it is the thickness of the oil, and 5w-30 is recommended for our small 4 cyls cuz the thicker the oil the harder it is for the crank and camshafts to spin through it too start up.

i use either mobil or castrol 5w-30 every 3500miles with a Fram Tough Gard.

Wow, i didnt even know that the CRX HF's were only 62 HP!! Thats even worse than my buddies 80 HP eclipse and that thing didnt move. How did the HF drive??? I almost went to look at one, good thing i didnt because i couldnt imagine half the horse power i have now.

As for gas i just use the middle gas. I dont think it really matters much with a stock si engine, but if i got a b16 i would use premium for sure .

i use the 91 octane with my nitrious, as for oil i use whatevers on sale or what i can steal at work. We have some company called Northland that delivers our bulk oil, so thats what i use.

Okay, I know this is already a post, but I just want a straight answer. Should I use synthetic oil or not? Money is not an problem, because like my man gunmen I can get shit cheap

I am definity not a expert but if i had a b16 i would definetly use mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic oil only. My friend has a b16 in his 6th gen and he wouldn't even consider anything but mobil 1.

I use Purolator or Napa (Wix) filters. I just recently came into a regular supply of Purolators (GI Joes) and I seem to get pressure quicker at startup so I'm changing to them permanently

Here's an interesting study in filters. It'll put you off Fram for life. There's a reason they are so cheap I guess.

I tried the 10w-30 Mobil 1 for higher mileage on my d15 with 197,000 - it does seem to burn the oil at a slower rate, which is good for me. I was burning a quart every 1000 miles, and now iti s about 2,000...so I am sold. I plan on 5w-30 Mobil 1 after the break-in on my rebuilt ZC is complete! it will be the first "new" motor I get to care for that someone else didn't ruin before I got it.
