probably the resonator that is connected to your intake system. Look at your airbox (it has the air filter in it) and disconnect any pipes that are attatched to it. Obviously dont disconnect your intake tube or your engine will be breathing unfiltered air.

This isn't really going to simplify things, but I should point out that while there is a true 'resonator', a resonating chamber, attached to the lower side of the air intake pipe between the air cleaner and throttle-body, there are also 1 or 2 muffling pieces of colored plastic (red, grey?) in the air cleaner itself that provide more airflow when removed... That is a common mod for Riviera hot-rodders and it does allow more intake and blower noise out of the left front. Also, the traditional automotive use of 'resonators' refers to the last items in the exhaust system, although the GM manual for these cars refers to the single muffler behind the cat as the resonator, and the dual resonaters as mufflers... Aaughhh! I've contemplated experimenting with straight-pipes in the exhaust system, but most of these joints are welded. |

im not trying to be patronizing but if you have a hard time finding the muffler v.s the cat, you should let someone with more automotive experience do your exhaust work.

Re: How do I make my car louder..removeing resonators..help plz..thanks
After reading this post I decided to finally un-cork the airbox and airway on my ’97 Riv.
I clipped the top of the staked posts holding the red liner in the lid. I used Alu-foil metal duct tape to cover/smooth the wart hole inside the rubber intake plenum. I also removed the Alu air straightener (honey comb) inside the intake manifold just before the mass air sensor. I don’t have dyno results but the SC/intake noise is a lot louder. I’ve also got an Airhog filter (been there 4 months). Rivrocket |

be careful removing the MAF screen (honeycomb), it helps the sensor read the air volume and can cause you to run too rich/lean and your LTFT values will be off. i personaly got worse gas mileage, and less hp with the screen out due to LTFT locking in at wierd values durring WOT...every car is different but cleaning the throttle plate and polishing the throttle body will give you better gains and better mileage vs removing the MAF screen.

Thanks for the info. I'll take the car for a voluntary emissions test and see what it reads with the screen out. I've taken them out of several of my cars with no ill effects (so far). |
