Security Features

Hello, i have a 05 TB LT and i have couple of questions as for the security features in it (anti-theft).


Ive been told by the dealer that the TB has a "pass lock" or "pass key" feature or something, i did not understand correctly, but it seems you need the key to start the car, without the key, you cannot start it, you cannot hotwire it, etc.

Is it true? If it is, is it enough or you guys would suggest to add some other stuff. Im not necessarily talking about boomerang or mobilus stuff (GPS tracking device) but just an alarm system, two way, etc..

Our trucks have GM's passlock system. It's built into the ignition, not the key. Basically the key (or a copy) has to physically be in the ignition for the truck to start and remain running. Passlock can be defeated with the addition of the appropriate ohm resistor pack, for the addition of aftermarket remote start kits, etc.. but IMO, I wouldn't install a RS on anything u want warrany coverage on.

keep in mind that u cant go to the store and have a key cut and have it work. it will unlock the door but as far as i know the "resistor" is in the black portion of the original key and it has to tell the ignition "its ok to start" so the dealer would have to get one made for you if u wanted xtras. I put a remote start in my 02 TB and it was a pain. it works but sets my alarm off until i unlock the doors. i'm told i need to add a resistor around the ignition to fool it.

No, any properly cut key will work with passlock. The 'resistor' is in the ignition, not the key. Passkey is the one with the *special* key. I just had the corner locksmith cut me a spare for my 2005 TB. Works just peachy.

Sure you can. I have spare keys cut for all my vehicles, and I test them in the parking lot before I leave the hardware store.

To the original poster: car alarms are a waste. Sure, they'll start screaming and flashing, but nobody cares. An experienced car thief will work right through it, and cut the noise in about 12 seconds. It's only going to do any good if somebody tries to steal it out of your driveway while you're sitting in the house, and that's not how cars are stolen.

Lo-Jack works, but only in urban areas, and only if they can track it down before the chop shop goes to work.

Park in a well-lighted area near pedestrian traffic, and keep your comp insurance current.

Another quick question, is the trailblazer in the bulls-eye of car thieves? Like if i go in a big urban city, and i leave it into a random parking lot, will it get stolen or people have other things to do.

Not particularly, unless you leave the keys in it...

Professionals steal cars for parts. It takes several years for a parts market to develop for a new model, and the TB was new in 2002. The most-stolen cars tend to be early- to mid-90s models.

Yeah, the all the info is correct except the "special" keys. Any Passlock one or two system you can use any cut key to start the vehicle. Any Passlock 3 or 3+ system you need to have a coded and learned key.

I do remote starters for many GM dealerships and the 2 systems require entirely different bypasses. Oh, if a dealership makes your warranty conditional because of your remote starter (if you get one) they have to provide THIER remote starter to you free of charge. It's actually federal law!
