91 Dodge ram350/Balljoint replacement?

Can anyone tell me what tools I will need to replace my worn ball joints, and how long it should take me, and any secrets that have been learned the hard way that I can avoid. Thank you:

Just take it to monroe/meineke or some garage and have it done, trust me it's worth the money. Otherwise you'll need a torch and a press at the minimum and it will probably take all day.

Autozone has a free tool loaner program that includes a ball joint press if you really want to do it yourself.

Re: 91 Dodge ram350/Balljoint replacement?

lot of work!!! need ball joint press, hub nut socket, might as well replace bearings and seals while it's all apart. i spent $300 an parts and replaced all ball joints, u joints and all bearings and seals plus rotors. labor is prob close to $1000 for this job. you need to press out the upper ball joint to get to the lower one through the hole where the upper one was.then you need to press in the upper first for the same reason.

Re: 91 Dodge ram350/Balljoint replacement?

A 1991 W350 uses a tapered roller bearing for a lower ball joint . The upper one consists of a tapered plastic cone with a spring to preload it . Changing the upper plastic cone is relatively simple if the front end is not to rusty . The right side is just four bolts to remove the upper retainer . The left side is the same except you have to deal with the steering arm . The lower bearing almost never fails if greased . ( I have never changed one).
