turbo upgrade

ok so a stock 1g has a 13g or 14b (autotrans)

what if the turbo is upgraded to a larger one, evo III 16G for example, would the fuel economy change at all, since there is less low end power but more power in higher rpms?

besides intake, exhaust, boost gauge & controller and fuel pump, would any modifications have to be done in order for this turbo to run without any problems?

how much power do you think the engine will have?

Re: turbo upgrade

your concept of turbo upgrading is wrong. Upgrading just the turbo does nothing, you probably won't be any faster. You need to turn up the boost, to do that you need fuel and engine management. You'll actually get better gas mileage if you stay off the turbo, my highway mpg went way up. you need many more supporting mods, check out the dsmtuners.com upgrade path, they have almost everything

Re: turbo upgrade

the a/ts have 13gs on them, you could run an evo III no problem if your at the stock boost levels. Your list is good but you will also need injectors to complete the setup

Re: turbo upgrade

Safc's work fine with 550 to 650 injectors at the most.

Re: turbo upgrade

i mean i still want the 1g to be my daily driver so i dont want to have too many mods, since they increase the chances of things going wrong

what are some problems that i can run into after getting this tuning thing, 250 fp, and evo iii?

since the evo iii is bigger than the 13g, whats the highest, safest boost i can run with this low amount of mods, and not harming anything in the car?

I'm not sure if I understood your post right... are you implying that running a larger turbo versus a smaller one at the same boost levels will not yield significant power gains, considering a stock air/fuel set-up?

Re: turbo upgrade

yeah, i was told that just upgrading the turbo was not going to make my car any faster, the boost would has to be increased and there would have to be some tuning

Re: turbo upgrade

Just turning up the boost will make an instant difference, you don't really need to hardcore tune until you're putting down some decent numbers and just want to get that much more out of it. I don't know what you're thinking for intake and exhaust mods, but a k&n filter with hard pipes will do and a 3" exhaust system. A Walboro 190 with a re-wire mod and manual boost-controller will do you just fine.

yep, putting a 16g in a car running stock boost won't make much of a difference. Boost won't fall off quite as early in a 2g, but they will still fall off due to cams.

anyone who runs a high boosted 16g can tell you that the turbo doesn't really come alive til around 18psi orso

So, you are saying that the evo3 16g won't really pull like a mofo until 18psi? Would 18psi be doable with the normal supporting mods and like a 190 pump and 550's?

with the supporting mods 18psi is possible. Honestly, around15 psi or so, the evoiii just doesn't pull that strong. Around 18psi it pulls hard, around 20+ it pulls like a mofo

yep, not from personal experience though, but the general consensus is that all the 16g's behave very similarly.

Re: turbo upgrade

not to jack the thread but what do you think I can run(boost wise) and be safe with the stock pump?
