Exclamation 98 wont start

i posted this in the nonspecific area as well:

my wife was driving down the road and all of a sudden the car just died.
i have checked everything i can except electrical. it has no spark and when you turn the key the engine lights dont come on. its not the ecm i have checked. it also doesnt get spark but it will turn over.
any ideas really need to get it running

(98' metro 3cyl 1liter engine)

i have checked the ignition system no spark but the components are good. the ecm is good and so is the timing belt and the rest of the mechanical. when i turn on the key i get not lights for check enginge and so forth, it will turn over but no start all of the fuses and fusible links are good to. if any know whats going on please let me know otherwise i will need to take it in because my wife needs it for school in a couple of weeks.

Broken timing belt? Would explain the cranking and no spark.

Re: 98 wont start

I have a 92 geo metro, i've replaced the starter, alternator, battery and now the ignition switch. It turns over when it wants too. Sometimes it will start on the first try and sometimes it takes 20 or 30? It's baffling me. I don't know what else to do. Please anyone!!!!! It doesn't making cranking noise, it just thunks one time. Fuel pump is working. Sometimes before it starts it is a delayed reaction, I can turn the key for like 5 seconds, then it will crank.

Re: 98 wont start

the timing belt is new and has been replaced and i checked it again and it looked fine it is also tightened to the right tention and it was timed right, but that doesnt explain why it has not dash indicator lights. i am taking it up to a guy i trust tonight to see if he can fix it just wanted to see if i could find out before i had to do that. thanks for the advice oh and i love the metro geozukigti!!

Thanks man! Perhaps your crank position sensor took a dump? Or the cam sensor. I had a 94' Concorde that did the same thing when the cam position sensor died.

Re: 98 wont start

well got the info back today. apparently it was a combination the timing belt jumped 3 notches, an ignition fuse was blown (which i think my neighbor blew) and the cat is totally clogged and with the O2 sensor being there it fouled the plugs. he has it running and luckily it will only cost me $600-700 for all of that. i have a really great mechanic and if anyone in Jacksonville, FL needs a good mechanic go to Ace Automotive on beach 724-0944. hes been in the business for many years and is a great guy and frankly the only mechanic in town i will trust with my car and thats saying a lot.

Re: 98 wont start

it was a new belt and apparently it stretched. we had the water pump replaced a few months ago and the belts were replaced at the same time

Re: 98 wont start

Ahh, that's why they say when you change the timing belt, have it re-tensioned after your first oil change. They always stretch a few mm when they're new.
