fan coming on too late / idle speed and shaking
My 94 Jetta III fan is coming on at about 200 degrees. The engine feels real hot. I had it flushed and put a new coolant fan switch. I feel it should come on sooner. The temp used to hover around the mid point , butit now goes to 20 then back in traffic. I live in Calgary Ca. It's cold and the engine should stay pretty cool.
My Jetta also shakes a lot. It will do this after about 5 minutes of being started. The RPM are at about 6000. It almost feels like it is going to shut down. I have changed plugs, wires, rotor and cap. It has not helped |

Re: fan coming on too late / idle speed and shaking
The shaking sounds like you need to have your timing adjusted ir you need to replace the throttle position sensor (TPS). That is fairly cheap to get done at a shop. The fan issue sounds like you need a new thermostat. Again very cheap (under $10 at a parts store), and you can do it yourself.

Re: fan coming on too late / idle speed and shaking
It sounds to me like your idle stabilizer is dirty. This is a very common problem. The idle drops too low and the engine shakes. If I remember right the RPM should be around 800. The idle stabilizer can be cleaned with carborator cleaner spray. As far as the temp is concerned, check the spec. I think 200 sounds about right. The fan is controlled by a sensor on the radiator.
