Steering Column Surgery?

I have a '91 F-150. 4.9L, 5-Sp. Was given to me by a family member and has alot of life left in it. It's been sitting for a few months . Charged the battery and as soon as I hooked up the battery the "run" lights appear on the dash. (battery light, check engine light, etc), even with the key not in the ignition????? I put a new ignition switch in it with no luck. Now the ignition won't return after attempting to start it. Turn the key....no noise, no clicks, no nothing. Anyone have any ideas where to go next? Initially I just want to get it to my garage to work on it. It was running excellent prior to being parked.
