84 Olds Omega-Tranny Prob (final drive?)

First of all let me start off by saying I thank anyone that can help me with this question...

I have an 84 Oldsmobile Omega and it has a AT 125C Automatic Transaxle.

From what I understand when the car goes over 35mph the engine connects directly to the wheels instead of going throught the tranny.

When I first got the car it would go in fine, and stay in, but it would not come out! I would go to stop and it would stall out from being in gear.

Since then I changed my transmission fluid and filter and that stopped for a while... Now I have another problem..

When it reaches 35mph it tries to go into it and then just comes back out, over and over... Sometimes it sticks and then when I hit a bump or a slight wind comes at me it kicks it out.

I really would like to know what this problem is, and if its anything costly. I have asked many people they cant tell me anything...

The problem has to do with the torque converter clutch solenoid. It is not working properly. It is electric and if the wiring is bad it will not work properly. The plug is located on top of the transmission and can be blue, red or yellow in color. The solenoid can be removed by taking jacking up the drivers side and removing the tire. You will also have to remove the inner fender. The side cover on the transmission is right in front of you. Remove the bolts and the cover, the solenoid is right in front of you. You will need to purchase a new solenoid from a dealer. Once it is replaced you shouldn't have any other problems. Good Luck!!

the only part I can find that is a selonoid in the tranny is " TRANSMISSION CONTROL SOLENOID" is this the same thing?

It doesnt "lock up" anymore at all, it only doesnt stay in final drive.. did i ruin something else or do you think its just the solenoid?

Possibly! Where is the solenoid you found located in the transmission? I really think it is the solenoid. You may also want to check the vacuum control modulator. Can cause similar problems.

Well, on Autozone.com all I can find for a solenoid is the Transmission control solenoid... But when I search on the net for TCC solenoid for my transmission/car it comes up with them. Would you think autozone would cary it?

Its the only solenoid I can find at both autozone and advanced auto.. It also says its for on/off lock? sounds like it?

It also says its for the TH125C, mines a AT125C, does that make a difference?

Also I found out from another site that if I unplug the electrical connection on top of the trans, and my prob stops, then thats what it is.. I tried it out and sure enough it doesnt go into the "final drive"....

my question is would it hurt the transmission to drive around with it off?

Im thinking it will help some since the trans constantly goes on and off of the final drive and I find myself gunning it around town...

That is correct, sorry I didn't mention it earlier. Unplug the connector and see what happens. If the problem goes away then replace the solenoid. The one you found at Autozone will work the one from AC looks like this:

Both will work but the one from AC doesn't require you to do as much splicing of the wires.

just one last question
will leaving the plug out cause any tranny probs,
Can I leave it out for a week or two?
