And it begins!

Welp my fellow af.comers today the engine has been pulled bandit is now without a heart...here are the plans let me know what you think or any tips you might have.

Bore over - .031
Stroke - .75
Making are old 400ci into a nice 472 ci

then adding

Eagle 455 crank
Eagle Rods
Federal Mogul bearings
Custom Ross Performance Pistons
Xe284 Cam
Comp Cams Pushrods
Edlebrock 87-cc heads
Ferrea Valves

Muhahaha with those parts and a little more work here and there in about 4 months time i should be seeing times of 12.0 - 13.20 at the track on pump gas

thanks goes out to jims hand book "How to build max-performance pontiacs v-8s"

Re: And it begins!

Bandit,

That combo IS good for about 530 HP (ask me how I know that...). I question the need for Ross pistons. The Eagle "kit" comes with SRPs, which are every bit as good as the Ross, and at a significantly lower price. I AM a Ross "dealer", I speak from experience. Also an Eagle "dealer", we substitute the Clevite mains ("full groove") for Federal Moguls (3/4 groove). The Clevite rod bearings are the best on the planet...

You "list" the Eagle 455 crank. If you order it that way, you'll get the wrong one. Eagle lists the one you want as a "400 Stroker" crank. That is, it has the 3" main journals to fit the 400 block. It also has the 4.25" sroke and 2.2" (BBC) rod journals.

You'll notice the source of that "recipe" in Jim's book is Central Virginia Machine Service (your's truly!). You might also be interested to know, I wrote Chapter 2, "Building Your Shortblock".

E-mail me about this project. Be glad to help.

Re: And it begins!

It's nice to see us old 'Birds on here. I'll try to post some pics of some of my old favorites that I had to sell. I'm still upset for selling my prize. It was a '76 TA ordered with rare options that I had to sell a few years ago. It only had 19k on the clock!!!!
Anyway, glad to see you are gonna build it right. Pbody, good to see you had a sharp eye!
