Worked on my car today part 2
Hey guys, I got to tinker around on the Talon again yesterday and I found some more interesting shit. First off, I checked on the oil filter houseing and all the wiring down there is gank as hell, there was one thing not even connected so I wasnt too worried about the oil pressure gauge reading 0. Then I decided to go over to the belt side and just look at it from the bottom. There is a pulley pretty much directly underneath the intake manifold that didnt have a belt going to it! What pulley is that for? I couldnt find a damn pulley map or whatever in the haynes manual. I thought it might be the water pump and maybe thats why it was overheating, so I put the battery back in and compression tested it. From the t belt it was 135, 125, 125, 140. I'm thinking that maybe the head warped a bit when it overheated and those middle two got taken out a little. What do you guys think? I think I am still going to go through with the ARP head studs and metal HG just so that I dont have to do it later. After thats done, I will compression check it again and see whats up. Any thoughts on the hole missing belt/overheating issue? Also, when we were cranking it over to compression test it, oil was kinda squirting out of the turbo feed tube, thank god theres still oil pressure.
Also, we painted Mike's valve cover (the one we got from EDMUND65)yesterday. Today we will start polishing the letters. |

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
your getting your head resurfaced right? I bet you are, just making sure, a new HG and ARP head studs wont make a differance if it isn't resurfaced =). But I bet you are getting it resurfaced.

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
With compression numbers that low and distant, I would be thinking rebuild, not headgasket. The motor is too beat up, they're 15 apart which iirc is the limit.

Directly under the intake manifold? You sure it's not the A/C compressor?

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
Yeah, I think it is the AC pulley. Not sure what I was thinking when I thought it was the water pump
. So today I got the coil pack out and went for the intake manifold stay (thats what the haynes manual called it, the bracket deal). Between the firewall and the intake mani is NOT a good spot to be working! GOD DAMN it was frustrating! I fiddle fucked around for 2 hours on those TWO damn bolts. Finally used a pry bar to get enough leverage on the rachet on one and a long ass board and hammer to pound the other one around. Anyway we got it off, but my temper was short as hell after that... Then we went to work on the timing belt. Well, tried. We were going at the drive belts and I couldnt figure out to get them to loosen and the Haynes manual was about as helpful as a Playboy is to a blind man. Can you guys tell me how to get them off? I'm with you (crunchy) on the rebuild. I thought about it and I would have the head off anyway, why not just take the block with it? Remember the knock? Could still be rod knock, it would be a bitch to get the head gasket done and get it out on the road for a test drive just to have a rod go out the side of the block. Besides, after the rebuild it would take the mods so much better for so much longer before I need another rebuild. I have always wanted a stroker but damn, lotsa money. Also, if I did get a stroker, I would end up with a purpose built track car, not a mid/high 11 sec street monster like I want. Not sure, but I may try to see if I cant squeak out an 11 on the big 16g by boosting the shit out of it and using a little (lot) of nitrous . I'll get a 50 trim or something for that. Anyway, I am going to get the head off, then take the block out. I think I will just do a basically stock rebuild since I am aiming for 400 and not more than 450. I'm thinking I'll stay with the 1g big rods and go for some stock 2g pistons for the higher compression. What do you guys think?

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
its the a/c compressor. 15 is the magic number but dont just to conclusions yet, I agree there is something wrong but it could be a few things. I highly doubt that you will need to touch your bottom end just because, yes you have readings 20psi apart, but it isn't likely for all the rings to fail at once. You will need to do a running and wet test just so you can verify where the leak is
EDIT: after reading your last post, if you already are having a rod knock you might as well tear that bitch down, I'd hate for you to have to do all that work and go beat the hell out of it and throw a rod

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
Yeah, the exhaust mani was hardly bolted on so I figured it was that, but theres still a chance of a rod knocking. Lets just think of it as preventative maintainance
. If there is rod knock is there a chance the block, rod, and/or crank be ok?1g rods with 2g pistons sound good? Any insight on the fucking alternator and power steering (I think thats the other one) belts? |

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
If you think that you may have slight rod knock, pull off the rod caps and check out what the bearings look like, if they're scored or marked up then re-build the fucker. Otherwise I would just do a head-up re-build and call it good. If you ARE going to do a full re-build, 2g pistons on 1g rods will be just fine for what you're looking for. Good luck and post some damn pictures when you get to working on it.

Re: Worked on my car today part 2
I cant get those other belts off to get at the timing belt, I cant figure it out and the haynes manual didnt help me at all.

Just cut them, they probably need to be replaced anyways.
