Cost to Rebuild Auto Trans ??

Have '97 1/2 ton Sierra 4x4. 5.7 litre, auto trans. Transmission went - slipping, ugly noises, etc. Anyone give me an idea of what cost I am looking at to have it rebuilt?

Re: Cost to Rebuild Auto Trans ??

That all depends on what you have done to fix it, or what needs to be done to fix it. If you take it to a trans shop they should be able to give you a quote. If it is getting up around $1200.00 I would go to the local gm dealer and see what they will sell you one for. With the gm trans you will get a better waranty, and from what I have seen better quality.

About $1200.00 to rebuild.Get one from Jasper if getting a replacement one.Jasper updates the parts inside that GM does not know about, cheaper than GM and a whole better warranty. If you get one from Jasper and you have problems, you can take it to any shop that sells Jasper with no problems.

Re: Cost to Rebuild Auto Trans ??

My 97 GMC Sierra 2WD cost me $1700 for a rebuild after the rear planetary gears decided to shred a couple years ago. That price included a new torque converter.

Re: Cost to Rebuild Auto Trans ??

WOW!! you guys got off cheap, mine 4l80e, $ 2,500, but then my planetary was destroyed and sent pieces all over the inside of the tranny, about the only usable part was the housing,"I break'em good", a rebuild using mostly B&M parts and a new converter, but I have not broken this one in 3 years so far.
Price though can vary big depending on type, damage, who does the rebuild,
imho it's better to shop around and maybe even spend a little more when it comes to trans shops, I have never in the 15 or so GM's I have owned had a stocvk tranny last, but after being rebuilt they were good to go, I looked around and had a trusted high performance shop do mine since I was unable to do it this time. not to knock the dealer, I just found that I felt more comfortable meeting the guy who had his hands in my tranny, and the warranty was pretty good as well, my thought on that was, I would rather not have to go back to any dealer to get the trans replaced AGAIN after having mine replaced with the same defective type unit that gave me trouble in the first place, too many horror stories.
goodf luck with the trans

Re: Cost to Rebuild Auto Trans ??

Got off cheap because your tranny is a 4l80e.
