Cool COOLANT LEAK photo...anyone got any idea?

during the ball joint replacement, when I had the front of the truck jacked up, I noticed coolant started to leak onto the floor. I took the best pic I could to show it. It appeared to be coming from the rear TOP of the transmission, i.e. - above the tank
Anyone?

Re: transmission leak photo...anyone got any idea?

That looks an awful lot like Dexcool.... Maybe leaking out of the rear of the intake?

Holy Shit You're Right! I never even thought of that. Just saw the red over the TRANNY and didnt think about it much. And it would make sense seeing as though it was propped up in the front, for it to run backwards.
I've been losing coolant too, but didnt know where from.

Where abouts are you suggesting its leaking from?

Rear of intake, if parking front uphill then top in the area between the intake and value covers running off, or heater hoses/heater connections on firewall.

Agreed, check both of those first, but my guess is rear intake

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but what do you mean by the "rear intake"? I followed the hose from the radiator back to its port on the top of the engine, and it doesnt appear to be coming from there....is that what you're talking about? Anyone have a photo?

usually, it's the lower intake gasket that fails, not the upper intake gasket. this gasket forms a little "square" in the valley of your engine. The gasket tends to fail towards the rear, or back, of the engine ... ya know, the part of the engine that's difficult to see, reach, and get to.

Re: transmission leak photo...anyone got any idea?

how difficult is it to replace this gasket, if it is indeed where I'm leaking from?

is it a head gasket? or a valve cover gasket?

I need to check the firewall as well for leaks around the heater core intake/exit

Re: transmission leak photo...anyone got any idea?

There's a how-to in the faq thread. The lower intake gasket is a common failure, but you should check to make sure it's leaking before attempting to replace it. It's a difficult job for a novice, but it can be done.

I would recommend getting a pressure tester so you can pump up the system and look for the leak with the engine cold.

Wow, that is quite the leak, get is fixed ASAP.

Also you will definitely have to flush your oil system a couple times as well.

Lower intake gaskets. Reach behind the engine with your hand and feel for moisture. Good spot would be behind the ditributor.

I should add that I did an oil change last night, and the old oil showed NO SIGN of coolant residue. Still likely that its that gasket?

Re: transmission leak (correction COOLANT LEAK) photo...anyone got any idea?

3 of my 2nd gen Blazers never showed any moisture in the oil or on the oil filler cap and they all leaked, in fact when I pulled the intake all showed orange Dex cool spray in the valley area so it was spraying and evaporating in there too - lucky none of them have had any lifter or bearing problems. Often a sudden case of lifter noise on start up can be the first indication the intake is leaking (assumes good oil filter and regular changes).
