2000 Shifting hard & Tow/Haul Mode

I just got a new bass boat and when I am pulling it about 75% of the time my truck shifts like it's got a 67 Chevelle shift kit in it. Only about 5% of the time will it do this when I am not pulling anything. Also, my tow/haul switch does not work all the time. Are there certain conditions in which this button will not activate or could I possibly have a short or worn out button? In case it matters, the day I brought the boat home the check engine light came on but went off that same day and has not come back on. It has been about 2 weeks now. Maybe this had something to do with that. If I have it read will the code from that light still be in it or does the light need to be on at the time of the reading? Just wondering if the truck has a memory.

The code should still be stored even if the light went out. You should get it read incase it is a tranny code.
