WIP - Tamiya Ferrari 310B 1/20

OK, and the next box down from the shelf is the Tamiya Ferrari F310B, been looking forward to getting started on this one for ages as when I opened up the box recently I found I had all these wonderful etch sets with it which I had forgot I had bought. I have also ordered the beautiful gold Perfect Parts BBS wheels and enhancement set from Ron at Racing Miniatures.
I will be adding as much detail as my skills and resources allow and this will include chopping the nose off. However, Im not sure what version of the car to do yet although I will definately be adding the extended rear wing to it which seemed to be used at the majority of races in 97, I have to decide wether or not to go for a wet or dry setup and also what side the fuel cap sits on depending on which race I decide on.

So anyway, the first pic is of basically whats in the box...

... the first step was to chop off the nose from the monocoque, I followed the seem line already on the part but gently does it here as any slip would cause a horrible mark on the bodywork...

... I then also separated the under side (part A16 & 17)

Having safely separated the nose into two pieces and after doing a few test fittings I discovered that the lower part of the removed nose tapered in considerably comapared with the topside and therefore didnt align with the bottom parts (A16 & 17), to fix this I used a small section of sprue, cut and filed to the right length and inserted it inside the nose to ensure a parallel gap from top to bottom, this ensured it fitted the bottom parts much better, this was then all stuck together and given a thorough sanding with some fine sandpaper. I then attached the two front wing supports (A26 & 27) to the nose, again sanding the seems to leave a lovely smooth finish. Once this is primed and sprayed there should be no joins at all which should mirror the one piece nose on the full size version.

not much I know but lots more coming soon

Sean

Best of luck, you've certainly got all the good bits needed. Why not do the Jerez attempted punt car!

Nice start, looks so familiar I will be starting on the 1997 Monaco Ferrari, but I have no rain tyres. Does anyone know where I can get them?

You can get treads from Red 5. (Both inters and full wets). Have a look thru google or go to ur usual supplier.

Re: WIP - Tamiya Ferrari 310B 1/20

Sorry for the gap between updates, busy at work lately!

anyway here goes, lots of surface preparation needed first of all, boring but has to be done before we can get onto the little details and real building...

added end piece to nosecone using plastic card and drilled for small holes in each corner. I will use some thin rod here to attach this to the main monocoque. Picture shows the filling process just starting.

added side pods A20 & A21, bottom side A16 & A17, airbox A13 and Drivers head protection to main structure, pics shows all items in place. This will then be filled and sanded. Also drilled opposite side fuel hatch open as the car is the Monaco version.

On bottom side made a small hole where a small support rod needs to be added which connects from here onto the tub floor. (see pic of floorplan below)

floorplan... moulding marks removed and a small hole added to take the rod which attached to monocoque, this will be predominantly covered in C/F...

underside primed and ready

monocoque, filled, sanded and primed and ready to take top coats! Have made a small boob here I forgot to add the blanking plate for the other side, I will have to add this before I get any further down the line!

a gloss white coat first, this will be top coated with Tamiya's Italian Red

...same for the nose cone and now give it a few days for it to dry and harden nicely.

so onto the motor!

the basic lump, most of the moulded details need to be removed from the top section as these will be replaced the P/E parts.

these need to come off too and...

having been removed leaves this.

Once details have been removed I gave it all a coat of primer and then painted the emtallic section of the trans a mix of polished alu and gold, the main block is flat aluminium, in between I am using Modelers C/F with lots of Microsol and Microset... so far so good!

Then moved onto the steering wheel, no C/F here, not on my reference pics anyway, lots of tricky hand painting. The padded area on each side was simply sanded with some course grade sand paper to leave the rough matt look seen here, centre in semi-gloss black.

The tiny 'dashboard' is C/F and I have handpainted the switch and labels as best as I could - these are tiny!!!!!!

Finally for this update is the seat, again C/F covered, the pads either side were painted matt black, I then used the hobby drill above the wet painted pained and drilled some wood, the sawdust falling off and straight onto the wet paint, this gives it the rough finish you can see in the pics. Once this was dry I gave it another coat of matt black and then added the badges.

more to come soon... honest!

Sean

Looking very good. BTW, if you don't already know, Tamiya do a Titanium Gold which is a very nice Aluminium/Gold colour. I know you can mix your own, but I'm lazy and at least it ensures parts match when you paint them at different times :-)

Re: WIP - Tamiya Ferrari 310B 1/20

Nice stuff!

One thing about the paint. I'm not really familiar with the Tamiya paints but if i remember correctly "italian red" is the standard red you would find on a street Ferrari. The 310B was the first though to sport the fluorescent red they are using now on the F1 cars and TS 49 should be the right paint... unless i'm getting it all wrong here and that one is called italian red:-)

Re: WIP - Tamiya Ferrari 310B 1/20

The F310B wasn't the first to use brighter red, the F1-2000 was!

Such an awesome project! Monaco - even better! Rain tyres I presume? Not that they helped much at that particular race...

Edit: actually, they did, got the '97 race mixed up with '96 one. So good choice, awesome race!

Re: WIP - Tamiya Ferrari 310B 1/20

Nope! The 310B definitely was the first one in fluo red!
If you believe BBR they used an even brighter one from 2000. I saw various cars next to each other and couldn't really tell the difference and the two BBR paints look just the same as well:-)

Re: WIP - Tamiya Ferrari 310B 1/20

thanks guys,

I didnt know about the tamiya colour no, worth remembering for next time though definately.

As for the C/F decals they are 1/24, I personally think the 1/20 scale ones are too big - I even considered the 1/43rd scale versions but these are definately too small.

I will be adding rain tyres yeah, care of big Ron at Racing Miniatures.

... and as for the colour yeah your right, my mistake it will be TS49 I will be using, just making sure your all still awake!!!!! ;-)

Sean
