Anyone know if one wiper blade is illegal in Virginia? Also what about neons?

§ 46.2-1020. Other permissible lights.

Any motor vehicle may be equipped with one or two fog lights, one or two auxiliary driving lights if so equipped by the manufacturer, two daytime running lights, two side lights of not more than six candlepower, an interior light or lights of not more than fifteen candlepower each, and signal lights.

The provision of this section limiting interior lights to no more than fifteen candlepower shall not apply to (i) alternating, blinking, or flashing colored emergency lights mounted inside law-enforcement motor vehicles which may otherwise legally be equipped with such colored emergency lights, or (ii) flashing shielded red or red and white lights, authorized under § 46.2-1024, mounted inside vehicles owned by members of volunteer fire companies or volunteer rescue squads or owned or used by professional fire fighters.

Unless such lighting device is both covered and unlit, no motor vehicle which is equipped with any lighting device other than lights required or permitted in this article, required or approved by the Superintendent, or required by the federal Department of Transportation shall be operated on any highway in the Commonwealth. Nothing in this section shall permit any vehicle, not otherwise authorized, to be equipped with colored emergency lights, whether blinking or steady-burning.

so for neons, they're not illegal to own, only to operate while you're on the road. (still sucks).

About the plus sized tires, they ARE legal. Naturally it's hard to find somewhere in the Code that says 'Hey, plus sized tires are legal, buddy!' but, after scouring through Title 46.2, just trust me.

As for tinting:

Except as provided in § 46.2-1053, but notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of this section, no sun-shading or tinting film may be applied or affixed to any window of a motor vehicle unless such motor vehicle is equipped with a mirror on each side of such motor vehicle, so located as to reflect to the driver of the vehicle a view of the highway for at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle, and the sun-shading or tinting film is applied or affixed in accordance with the following:

1. No sun-shading or tinting films may be applied or affixed to the rear side windows or rear window or windows of any motor vehicle operated on the highways of this Commonwealth that reduce the total light transmittance of such window to less than thirty-five percent;

2. No sun-shading or tinting films may be applied or affixed to the front side windows of any motor vehicle operated on the highways of this Commonwealth that reduce total light transmittance of such window to less than fifty percent;

3. No sun-shading or tinting films shall be applied or affixed to any window of a motor vehicle that (i) have a reflectance of light exceeding twenty percent or (ii) produce a holographic or prism effect.

I cut out less important points. So basically, nothing on your windshield, 50% on your side windows, 35% on rear-side and rear windows. Provided you have side mirrors =)

As for windshield wipers

Every permanent windshield on a motor vehicle shall be equipped with a device for cleaning snow, rain, moisture, or other matter from the windshield directly in front of the driver. The device shall be so constructed as to be controlled or operated by the driver of the vehicle. Every such device on a school bus or a vehicle designed or used to carry passengers for compensation or hire or as a public conveyance shall be of a mechanically or electrically operated type. The device or devices on any motor vehicle manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1943, shall clean both the right and left sides of the windshield and shall be of a mechanically or electrically operated type.

So, as long as it wipes the windshield in front of you, and in front of the passenger side, yeah they're fine. In fact, a few models of the Mercedes only have one wiper blade. Design better than the garbage ppl put on their civics, but whatever. It's your car.

and now for suspension: After syphoning through the garbage, here's the section of the Code that deals with lowering your car:

§ 46.2-1063. Alteration of suspension system; bumper height limits; raising body above frame rail.

No vehicle shall be modified to cause the vehicle body or chassis to come in contact with the ground, expose the fuel tank to damage from collision, or cause the wheels to come in contact with the body under normal operation. No part of the original suspension system of a motor vehicle shall be disconnected to defeat the safe operation of its suspension system. However, nothing contained in this section shall prevent the installation of heavy duty equipment, including shock absorbers and overload springs. Nothing contained in this section shall prohibit the driving on a public highway of a motor vehicle with normal wear to the suspension system if such normal wear does not adversely affect the control of the vehicle.

So, as long as it doesn't touch the ground under normal driving conditions, the fuel tank never comes in contact with the ground, and everything is in complete working order, the ground is the limit! =)


So that's pretty much everything applicable to sporting out your car. Nothing about engine swaps, emissions (to an extent)... basically, the only things you have to worry about are lights. If you guys have any other questions, I can find it for you. There's also a search engine in the code that you might want to use before you ask me though. It's kinda fun to poke around in there and find the little loopholes.

One other thing i found out talking to a cop the other day that I thought was interesting - believe it or not, there's no law that involves loitering in VA! You cannot get a ticket for 'loitering'. Period. Bout the only thing a company/person can do is put out a tresspass notice on you. So you wanna hang out somewhere, go for it! Who's gonna say anything? =)
