Question 1999 chevy tahoe

1999 chevy tahoe Just bought a 99 tahoe. After the first day i noticed chirping sound from under the hood after listening carefully it came from the belt tensioner. From my experiance with chevys i always noticed the tensioner had a slight bounce to it which was normal because to me its automatically tensioning hte belt. My question is in newer models (1999) is it still supposed to bounce or stay tight? the chirping stopped but every now and then hear it. So don't know if the tensioner is defective or what? Thanks Guys

Re: 1999 chevy tahoe

They really are not supposed to "bounce". The pupose of the spring loaded tensioner is to keep the belt at a constant tension no matter what the temperature or if it has stretched slightly.

You may have irregularities in your belt, or the bearing could be going out on the tensioner. If you are up there on miles I would recommend replacing it. Mine was making more of a clicking sound (at around 130K miles) and bouncing, and when I took off the belt it had a lot of slop in the bearings and it felt rough. They're not too much $, and it's a lot easier to do in your garage than out on the road after it wipes out your belt and leaves you stranded!
