Angry Demonic Differential Possession

Shortly after picking up my new 2000 SS, I noticed a lot of clunking coming from the differential when coasting with the clutch pedal pushed in. It also made this clatter when coasting under neutral load. I went to the dealer, and after a test drive they pulled the cover to find lots of metal filings. They supposedly "rebuilt" the differential, whatever that means.
After the repair, I picked up the car, and in a short time the rattling returned. This time the dealer said that, according to GM, this was a normal sound for the Torsen differential, and that it was just fine. I spoke with other SS owners, and they heard nothing from their differentials. Anyway, I proceeded to rattle around for a few years, and moved from NM to MO.
Suspecting that the "differattlential" would be a source of problems in the future, I purchased an extended warranty after the factory warranty expired. Good thing.
About six months ago, I noticed a fluid puddle on my garage floor. Took it the local Chevy dealer. They replaced the front seal, which lasted about a week. They then replaced a seal and rear u-joint. They said the gear lash was still within specs, but right on the edge.

OK, long story short...a month after the above repair, a bearing went out and filled the rear end with small chunks of metal. The dealer replaced about $1500 worth of gears, etc. All new..... NOW, the rear end has begun rattling again. PLUS, it has acquired a loud gear whine when applying even a little power on a turn. It only whines on corners when the car has been driven enough to completely warm the diff. fluid, not when it is cold. I called Chevrolet, and the only thing they were interested in was telling me that their warranty expired some time ago, and that technical problems are dealt with through their dealers. Thanks!

My extended warranty company (1Source) just went belly up, so no more warranty. (They did, however, pay out more than I paid them.)

So, a few questions..
1. Any thoughts on why this differential is so prone to problems? There has to be some underlying problem.
2. Should I consider an aftermarket differential?
3. If so, any recommendations?
4. How many $$$ are we talking about?

Other than this, I have no problems with the car. Sure it has body rattles, and is prone to slip around on anything but dry pavement....but that is a Camaro (This is my fourth one...70-1/2, 73, 83 Z28, and this one.)

Re: Demonic Differential Possession

true true^^^^

aside from that a 12 bolt could be found used for about 1800 dollars.

torsen units are supposed to be pretty good. With all of the work that was done to that rear id say that you got a dud.
