Door handle broken - need help!

I can open my 1997 suburban from the outside but cannot from the inside. The inside handle is real "floppy" for lack of a better word - it has no tension to it...obviously this is my problem but what do I need to do? Replace the handle? Will that do it? How do I do that? Would I be better served to just take it to the dealer? Thanks for your input!

Re: Door handle broken - need help!

I think this is a pretty common problem on these Suburbans. The driver's side broke on my wife's about a year ago. It was actually the pot metal part of the handle you pull to open the door that broke into two pieces. I had to go to the dealer to get the correct color of handle and it was about $31. You need to remove the inside door panel and the handle mechanism is held in place with a pop rivet that has to be drilled out. I put a sheet metal screw back into mine when I did it. The door panel is held onto the door with those plastic "Christmas trees" that have to be pulled out of the door without breaking them or destroying where they attach to the door panel. I think there is two phillips screws down in the armrest that you have to remove and then start at one of the lower corners and start removing the "Christmas trees". A large flat blade screwdriver and a stiff putty knife works pretty well. Just take your time and work it around and hopefully you won't break any of them. Disconnect the plugs for the door locks, window controls and the little courtesy light at the back part of the door and lift off the panel.
Once you get the door panel off you will see how it's attached and the rest is pretty easy. Good luck.

Re: Door handle broken - need help!

Got mine here when it broke

http://www.1aauto.com/1A/DoorHandleI...Truck/Suburban

$19.95 for the replacement...

The pain is taking the interior door panel off with all the controls etc.. such as "Old Dave" describes. I replaced the drilled out pop rivet with a new one was the only difference. Total job was about 2 hours or so... maybe a little more.
