Burning Oil BAD!!!
I have an 89 civic hatch with a 1.6 si. i love the car but its burning way to much oil and i have to put oil in it every week.
Now my question... what could it be? My friends tell me its the head gasket. do u think thats what it could be? thanks for any help! |

Re: Burning Oil BAD!!!
If it's the headgasket you would notice a loss of compression and/or power and may even overheat if your mixing oil and coolant. More than likely your piston rings are bad. Time for a rebuild or a swap or you can just keep adding cheap oil every week. GL

Re: Burning Oil BAD!!!
how mechanically inclined are you or your friends because you can do a ghetto rebuild with the engine in the car and just replace the rings, bearings and gaskets

Re: Burning Oil BAD!!!
I'd start by checking the compression. You might "luck out" and it might just be the valve guide seals. That kind of work will "just" require removal of the head. GL

Also make sure the hose is not clogged. Also, you might want to consider the OEM PCV valve, I've had fitment problems with aftermarket valves in the past.

Re: Burning Oil BAD!!!
I put 2 liters of oil in with every fill in my old si. The rings were done, I'd be willing to bet that your problem is the same. My heagasket went later on so I got a B16 though. Best decision I've made.

Re: Burning Oil BAD!!!
Usually if the rings are bad, you will also get gas in your oil, thats what is wrong with my 93 civic. I should say that is what mine is doing, makes complete sense to me, plus when I swapped heads, I was able to wiggle the piston a little bit too much, so that was a give away on bad rings.
I would try the PCV valve, and then try a compression test, hopefully it is just the valve seals.

Re: Burning Oil BAD!!!
could also be valve seals as well. Does it smoke in high rpms, or does it smoke upon start up? or both?
