Hello-
So I bought my 2000 Lincoln LS 2 years ago with $37,000 Miles on it...since then..

1. COILS!!! what is up with this?? I have (8 )coils and they are telling me I should replace all of them for about $800.
I only replace #2 & 3.... why is this happening?? it seems every lincoln has this problem? I am very disappointed. Do the words RE-CALL mean anything to LINCOLN??
2. when I start my car and use heat/ air ...i get this stinky smell ..kinda like a dirty smelly truck infont of me blowing in my face. I know 3 people with the same car, all diffrent years, and they say they all have this problem? What is it and am I breathing toxic into my lungs?
3. Valve cover gasket...it is a simple rubber looking thing that goes over the valve cover...and they want $400??? I replaced it myself. I am 24 year old woman...the reason it cost so much is becasue they put the valve cover under everything...very hard to get to.
I love my car......but i am VERY disappointed that it does not run as smooth as it did, befor the coil problem?? it cause stress that I deal with every time i start my car. What is this prolem with these damn coils???????????????????

The root cause for issues 1 and 2 are probably due to #3, leaky valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is probably leaking into the spark plug wells, causing the coils to find a lower resistance path to ground (through the oil) than through the spark plugs.

The gasket is/was leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold(s) and the stench you smell when you turn on the HVAC system is burning oil. Did you clean off the engine black and manifold when you did the valve cover gasket repair yourself? You may also want to change out the cabin air filter as some of the odor may be trapped in the paper filter from the previous leak.

Now that you've performed the valve cover gasket repair yourself, you probably understand why they suggest replacing all 8 coils at the same time. If you pay a shop the labor to replace only one or two at a time, the labor 3 months later when the next one goes bad will be duplicated. Do them all at once and only pay the labor once (hopefully). Plus, when they have all 8 out, they can easily check for oil leaking into the plug wells at the same time and save some labor chages by doing valve cover gaskets at the same time.

As for issuing a recall on this, recalls are typically just called for when there is a safety issue with the car. A misfiring cylinder is not likely to cause a safety hazard. Leaking oil onto an exhaust manifold is a slightly different story however....
