squeaking on turns

when the car is at a complete stop and i start making a turn, it makes a loud squeaking sound, its also kinda bumpy, but when the car is running, the car turns fine withouth the squeaks, any idea what this is or the cost for fixing this, or is this something easy to fix?
thanks

Re: squeaking on turns

I've never heard of that before. Could it be the power steering has gone bad? When you say it doesnt do it when its running are you making sharp turns and when it is running your mabye just going around a curve and the wheels aren't turned as much?

Re: squeaking on turns

The belt running the steering pump is loose or worn.

The reason why it just happens with you are at a dead stop is because it's harder for the steering pump to a turn a wheel that is not moving because it has to overcome the friction of the tire to the ground (not many people remember the days before power steering).

Just change that belt out and you should be okay. (and try to avoid turning the steering when not moving, you can wear out other parts more quickly that way).

Re: squeaking on turns

^ Sound advice as always.
Also first things first, I'd check the PS fluid. It's probably the belt, but it doesn't hurt to check and see if you are low.

Re: squeaking on turns

Well I'd start with the belt as 2old said. If it isn't that, then start inspecting your wheel bearings, cv joints, etc.

Re: squeaking on turns

It shouldn't take a mechanic more then half an hour to install so even at the dealership you are looking at most $50...

It's not dangerous to the vehicle to drive it like that aside from the noise... I wouldn't ignore it forever because the squeal will only get worse and if it breaks you lose power steering (I can't remember what else is running off that belt).
