Unhappy Loud POP when turning left

1993 Cherokee, 4.0, 2WD, 181K miles. For about 1 1/2 weeks I get a "loud" pop noise when I turn left. It sounds like the same spot in the steering,(ie when I am going straight there is no pop, turn left there is a pop, turn right no pop) It sounds like something is hitting under the floorboard under the driver's side, and you feel it in the steering column. I put it on a lift and yanked and beat on the suspension parts with a rubber mallet and couldn't find anything loose or cracked. I checked the balljoints by pulling on the tire in all directions, it didn't move so I assume they are good. Finally I greased everything up. Nothing has worked so far. It mostly (95%) happens when the vehicle is moving, forward or reverse. I have yet to catch it when I'm parked so I can see what is binding up. New shocks installed about 2 months ago. Thanks in Advance.

Re: Loud POP when turning left

it is probably the track bar. My 97 did that for awhile because a shop that told me the first track bar i had on it after i got it lifted was bad they put a new one on and it started making that poping sound so i took to the dealer that lifted it and thats what it was. so tighten your track bar or have someone who knows how to do it

Re: Loud POP when turning left

Thanks, it was the trackbar. I finally got the pop when I was parked and had a chance to check underneath. Unfortunately, the ball stud was spinning when I tried to tighten the nut. I ended up using a floor jack and socket. I put the socket over the grease fitting and jacked it up until it quit spinning. It only took one more hole in the "castelated nut" and it has yet to make any more noise. I now believe the problem originated when I put on a new boot for the track bar and couldn't tighten it up properly because of the spinning ball stud. Funny thing was it took 4 years to finally make the POP.

Re: Loud POP when turning left

Hello!

I am having the same problem!

I hear a click at one point in the steering and I feel it on the floorboard.

the only problem is that I have no idea how to tighten the Track Bar.

Do you know of any links that would have instructions on how to tighten the Track bar?

Thanks!

Re: Loud POP when turning left

You cannot tighten the track bar, it needs to replaced. However, that might or might be your total solution. What "BRAINY" is talking about in his post is not common...that is the hole has been enlarged.

Best thing to do is check the play in all of the front suspension.

Re: Loud POP when turning left

What Alohabra said is true, there's no "adjustment". However, my '88 was making a similar "clunk".

The track bar mounts to a bracket under the driver side frame rail. There are 2 bolts underneath and 2 more inside the wheel well. The bolts in the wheel well are backed by nuts inside the rail (under the air box).
Make sure all of them are tight.

On mine, the 2 in the wheel well were loose. Tightening them up cured my "clunk".
