Overheat and transmission confusion
Ok so here's what I've had happen to me a few times now... After I've been out driving I'll come back home and put the car into park and will leave the car running for just a min. or two, and when I get back in the car and put it in drive the transmission will begin to slip on me, I look down at the temp. gauge and it's reading 20-30 degrees over normal. If I let the car cool down for an hour or so and try it again it drives fine, no problems at all. This only seems to happen when the engine gets hot, and the transmission only slips in drive. How are these two things related and why might my car be heating up for no reason.Thx, for the help |

Re: Overheat and transmission confusion
it would help to know what year and engine, but anyway..
If car is overheating, then something IS wrong. They dont overheat for no reason at all. Causes could be thermostats bad. Improper mix of coolant. Pluged hoses or radiator. Water pumps goiong out onya. If the transmissions sliping check the fluid first off. They will slip when just a 1/2 quart low on fluid. Lastly, if the trans its self is overheating, then it may hav some blockage in its lines, or the filters pluged and needing service.

Re: Overheat and transmission confusion
It's a 99 3.4L. Like I said it doesn't slip all the time, it's only done it 2-3 times over the last month or so, and only when the temp. guage reads over 200 degrees. I had the tran. fluid checked when I had the oil changed last and the level was fine and the fluid was clean.

Re: Overheat and transmission confusion
have you had any other problems otehr then the running slightly hot and the trans slippage, such as weak performance, hard starting or very very bad gas milage?
The only thing that i can suggest as a possiblity is your catalytic converter is clogged. When they get clogged up the car will run much hotter then normal and you will experience some trans slipping at first, it'll progressivly get worse until the car won't start. Keep in mind it still could be a combination of a trans problem and a coolant problem. Hope this helps, good luck

Re: Overheat and transmission confusion
No as far as I can tell those are the only problems, I haven't checked the gas mileage in a while but it's not much different if any then normal.
