????overdrive
is it normal for my truck to go into OD between 30 & 35 mph? if I shut my OD off over 30mph i gain a couple hundred rpm's. i thought it engaged at 40mph and up. it just seems kinda slow to put that kind of drag on the motor and tork on the tranny. Also, is it safe to put LUCAS tranny treatment in w/ the atf+4 tranny fluid when I change it?
I have a 98 dodge ram 4x4 w/ a 360 |

Re: ????overdrive
is there anything i can do to fix it? i dont notice performance issues, I just had this bright idea of shutting off OD while going through town about 33ish mph and i watched the tack jump about 200 rpms. not alot but enough to make me wonder.

Re: ????overdrive
until you get it fixed, shift manually, in fact, once in a while shift through all your gears manually, it creates more pressure and halps to keep the channels cleaner, thats what a tranny guy told me anyway. I believe you can have it adjusted. Mine shifts in at 45.

Re: ????overdrive
OK, anybody know what kind of tranny is in my truck? It is a 98 Quad cab 360 auto tranny. I took my tranny filter in to auto zone and they said I have a 47RE when comparing my filter w/ theirs, It was the more exp. filter and was totaly different looking then the 1996 and1997 filter which says its a different tranny. But my owners manual says the 47 came w/ 8.0 ltre. and the 46 came w/ 360 and 318. So can anybody figure out what I have.

Re: ????overdrive
OK, I was kinda hoping that I had a tranny that dodge supposedly improved from few years past. So why is my tranny filter different then the few years prior if they are all the same, other then i have a tranny cooler?

Re: ????overdrive
The only way of knowing for sure what type of transmission you have is to look at the pan rail number . This is stamped into the transmission case above the oil pan lip on the left side . Most likely a 46RE . The 46RE and the 47RE both take the same filter on 1998 and newer applications.

Re: ????overdrive
Now it makes more sense knowing they both took they same filter. Now for a dumb quest. Whats better of the 47 filter then the 46? I put in ATF+4 back in the tranny....was that ok, I just read the manual and that says ATF +2......but that was in 98 didn't the +4 just come out recently and is better?

Re: ????overdrive
neither are better. anything made after the 1970 is junk!!! if you have a o/d switch, just turn it off until you hit the freeway!!!

Re: ????overdrive
ATF +4 supercedes +2 and +3 . The 46RH was obsolete by 1998 .

Re: ????overdrive
I'm saying it is most likely a 46RE . If you look underneath you will see an output speed sensor on the extension housing . This means it has an electronic governor , making it a "RE" rather than a "RH".
