catalytic converter or automatic transmission?

1988 escort all of a sudden no power? if it were a stick i would think it was the clutch slipping badly. but it is an automatic. the engine revs high when i step on the gas and the car barely moves until it shifts into second and then it gradually increases in speed. when i stop it just inches along. any clues thanks, edsel...

If the car revs and it doesn't move then the transmission is the issue. Check the fluid to make sure the level is correct but if not then a new transmission is in your future.

how could that in anyway even be exhaust related?

I'd have to agree with GTP Dad. You probably need a new tranny if the fluid isn't low. If this doesn't help you could drain and refill the tranny with Ford Type F transmission fluid. Use it instead of Mercon because it is a little thicker and might get it to shift again if the seals are leaking. There is some stuff on the market that claims it will give tired trannies new life. I don't know if it works or not. I'm thinking it will thicken the fluid. I am somewhat skeptical about whether or not it works. As a last resort, though, I would give it a try.

regarding "what even hints at the cat?"...the catalytic converter is a easier and cheaper fix and second if the cat is plugged up the symptoms of no power as you attempt to accelerate and third tranny is much more work, ect...anyway it appears to be the tranny. i opened the exhaust above the cat hoping the cat would be plugged up and resolve the problem but no luck. will try the thicker fluid or additive but with a150,000 miles on the car it more than likely needs the tranny. thanks now i am looking for a post as to how to replace the trans and see if it is worth the trouble, thanks again, edsel...

Your best bet is to go a chain automotive parts place and get a Haynes manual for about $20. I bought one 3 years ago for $15 and they are probably a little higher now. The Haynes manual has a step by step approach to the work with pictures. There are 37 steps in my manual to pull the automatic etc. etc. These manuals have the right stuff to do just about anything on an Escort. Besides, the first time you use it, it will pay for itself.

If the tranny is gone try car-part.com to find a used transmission from a wrecking yard in your area. Also try e-bay, I have seen several posted there.
It will save you a lot of money.
