stuck in 4x4 all the time

Does anyone know why our 2002 Ford Explorer is stuck in 4 wheel drive , then it will shift into high 4x4 when the roads are fine?

Not sure but I would be sure to check your tires. If the rears are worn more than the front it could be tricking the sytem into thinking your rear tires are slipping (engaging 4x4) as they would technically be traveling faster than the front tires.

Hi, There are 2 sensors in the transfercase, One senses front wheel speed and the other rear wheel speed, Common problem for them to go bad and or contaminated from metal residue in the transfer case as they are a magnetic pickup sensor...Best I can do...GOOD LUCK....Clay..
