Engine Code

I have an 2002 Stratus I only have 37,500 miles on it. The other day it was stalling then the engine light came on. I manage to get the code it was p0700 I heard it means Transmission control systems failure. It took it to be check out all they did was drive it around the block and told me I need a new Transmission. My friends don't believe it. They told me the car doesn't have a lot of miles on it to need a new one. My question is have anyone ever heard of needing a new transmission so soon?
