Question charging

After trying to jumpstart the wifes car about a week ago my generator has been making a hissing or whining sound that increases in pitch according to engine rpm and the volt meter in the dash have behaved a bit strange... today the car stopped charging completely.
Generator or charging-relay breakdown, guesses anyone?
Is the charging-relay built in to the generator or is it placed somewhere else?
What years of generators fit in a Cutlass cruiser 90, 3,3 litre FI engine, AC, PS?

Re: charging

The relay and voltage regulator are an integral part of the alternator. Replace the alternator and the issue should go away. If you change it yourself then make sure you disconnect the battery cables before you do anything. You can ruin a new alternator by arcing the main lead.
